Coach Greg Howard has decided to retire from his duties as Athletic Director of Logan County Schools and his job as track coach. He has coached and taught in the Logan County Schools 26 of the last 27 years, and he has built Logan County Athletics into one of the most successful overall programs in Western Kentucky. He has issued the following heart-felt statement:
“I came to Logan County in 1995 and have loved every minute of it. In my career at Logan, I was blessed to coach cross country, track and field, and boys basketball. I have also been blessed to be the athletic director for the past seven years.
“But most importantly, I’ve had the tremendous pleasure of teaching and coaching so many great kids! I’ve learned far more from them than they ever learned from me. Incredible young men and women that understand what it means to be great and what it takes to get there.
“I once left Logan to take the head girls basketball position and teach at Todd County for one year.
“I received an offer to come back home to LC after that and I have been here ever since.
“I know the timing of my retirement may not be conventional, but the timing was a family decision to retire at this time. Our track team is in the capable hands of Coach Elijah Sells, one of my former runners and he won’t miss a beat. He is tremendous with the kids and his heart is in the right place.
“We talk about Cougar Pride, but I’ve learned talking about it is one thing, but showing it is another. So proud of having so many former alumni now teaching and coaching in our schools.-
“To say I love Logan County would be a vast understatement. I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside great teachers, administrators, coaches, superintendents, and board members. The relationships I’ve had the honor of making with all of these people has been a true blessing to me and my family. Working with bus drivers, custodians, and maintenance workers is like putting icing on the cake.
“I would also like to add the importance of many of our student athletes having so many opportunities that gives them chances at success in whatever they choose for their career and other life choices. Another note of importance would be the valuable business and community support that has helped transform Logan into the school it is today.
“I can't wait to see what lies ahead.
“Yes, without a doubt, it has always been a great day to be a Cougar!”
