The Fourth Annual Cardinal Classic in Adairville was held on February 24-26 and lived up to pre-tournament billing as a true classic.
Despite stormy weather that all most ended the first night before it began, Trigg County High School braved the elements and came ready to get revenge
on an early season loss to Logan County High School, which handed them a rare loss in the Panther Tournament two weeks earlier.
Despite a great effort from Jeannie Moore’s Cougar team, Trigg managed to get the revenge they sought and defeated the Cougars by 36 points, 3,372 to
3,336. But neither team was destined to take home the winner’s trophy, as Henderson County High out-shot both teams with a tournament record 3,417 to
win the top prize. These three teams will battle next at the State Tournament on March 28 and 29 in Louisville. Russellville High’s team placed a very
respectful fourth with 3,032 points; the Panthers are a very young team with a bright future.
Austin Smotherman led the Cougars with a 291 (out of a possible 300 score), placing him fourth overall. Tyler Appling and David Foster were close with
a 283 scores, tying them for ninth. Brandon Hunt was one stroke back. For the Lady Cougars Kristen Hudson shot 276, Marah Harris 271, Amanda Keith 270,
and Christiana Farmer 266. For the Panthers top shooters were Brian Clinard at 276, Mason Turley 265 and C.J. Borden 261; for the Lady Panthers Breann
Thomas 261 and Brady Castro with a 241. Overall top shooter for the tournament was Aaron Daniels of Henderson County with a incredible score of 295.
Friday night brought in the local teams as Auburn Elementary shot in their first-ever tournament and despite the first time jitters showed they would
be a team to reckon with as they shot a team score of 2,615. They brought a huge crowd of very enthusiastic fans and showed great sportsmanship as the
Tigers, coached by Darrin Watkins and Bill Moore, got their first competition under their belts. Josh McKinney and Joey Dilliha led the guys with a 256
and 247 scores. The girls were led by Emali Wilkins’ 231 and Zoe Beasley at 217. Auburn also shot several archers in the 10 meter only shoot, placing 7
of the top ten shooters.
For the Elementary Division Lewisburg took the top spot with a 3053 score, Henderson North second was at 2982 and Chandlers scored 2936 for third
place, giving the local teams two of the top three spots. Kaitlyn Foster had the top score among all elementary girls with a 286. Sydney Lee was fifth
at 263 and Caitlyn Hardison eighth at 258. For the boys, Aaron Baugh was second overall at 273 and Ross Coursey eighth at 263.
Chandlers’ top performer in the Elementary Division was sixth grader Alyssa Lowe, who was sixth with a 260. Tristen Chestnut was 10th at
255, Cheyenne Brown 13th at 253. Cara Stranger, Dakota O’Dell and Sarah Montgomery also scored well.
Braden Stranger of Chandlers finished third among Elementary boys with a 272. Dusty Coker shot 253. A.J. Simmons shot 246, Brett Thomas 236, Joseph Van
Cleave 235 and Peyton Flick 231.
For the Middle School division Trigg County Middle took first with a 3,386 score, Henderson North Middle School had 3257, and home team Adairville
placed third with a 3,214 score. Adairville was led by Laura Hendricks with 278, Christian Lynch 275 and Grace McLellan 273, with Jenny Colbert at 272.
The boys were led by Joseph Hallman’s 273; Taylor Blakemore was close behind with a 263.
Lewisburg’s middle school boys were led by Shaun Manning, who finished eighth with a 279. Jackson Wells was one spot behind at 278. Mackenzie Yakuboff
won the 10-meter shoot with a 132 of 150.
When high school, middle school and high school scores were compared, Lewisburg’s Foster was fifth overall, the top elementary shooter. Next was
Adairville’s Hendricks at 18th. Hudson was the top local high school shooter at 21st with Adairville McLellan and Lynch 22 nd and 23rd. Adairville’s Colbert just missed being in the top 25. Logan’s Harris was 28th and Adairville’s Amber
Anderson 29th.
This week finds all local teams at Cadiz for the Regional Tournament and a chance to earn a spot in the State Tournament on March 28 and 29.
Thanks to all the support not only the people of Adairville, but we received help and support from throughout the county as coaches and parents pitched
in to help make this a great weekend for Archery and the youth of Logan County.
I also want to thank Southern Heights Baptist Church for their act of kindness to the Trigg County team. After shooting Thursday night Trigg and LCHS
went to Sol Azteca Restaurant for a social gathering, which has become a annual tradition with the two teams. As the weather worsened especially in
Trigg County, their director of transportation told them to delay their return home until the storm blew through.
Richard Hughes, one of Adairville’s coaches, called Brother Carl Frudenthal to ask if they could go the Legacy Center behind the Southern Heights
Baptist Church. He came out and opened the building up so the kids could relax and have some fun while they waited for the weather to calm down. LCHS
Principal Casey Jaynes, his wife Laura and coaches and parents of local kids also stopped by to check on the visitors to see if they needed anything
else. Once the storm passed they safely drove back to Cadiz, arriving just after 11 p.m., a little tired from all the fun but with a great story to
tell on Friday at school. Another great example of what a great community we live in.
