After losing their first four games of the season, the Logan County Cougars have gotten on a roll. They have won four straight games, three of them in a two-day span and are now 5-5 on the season going into Christmas.
On Friday, the Cougars beat Fourth Region opponent Cumberland County 65-53 in a regular season contest.
Jack Delaney led the way with team highs in points (20) and rebounds (7(. Kade Wall had 13 points; he and Delaney combined to hit 13 of 15 free throws.
Evan Campbell added 10 points and 6 rebounds. JunVontre Dillard contributed 5 rebounds.
Delaney, Wall, Zane Batten and Colby Collins each hit a three-pointer.
To start the Roy’s Bar-B-Que/First Southern National Bank Shootout Tuesday, Coach Josh Frick’s team beat Calhoun Academy of South Carolina 65-54.
Delaney not only led the team in scoring again with 16, but he also was deadly at the line, canning 5 of 6 foul shots. With Batten hitting 4 of 5, the Cougars sank 12 of 15 free throws.
The scoring was balanced with Wall adding 12 points, Collins 10, Brady Hinton 9 and Batten 8. Wall and Collins each hit a pair of three-pointers and Delaney added another.
Hinton totaled 7 rebounds, Delaney 6 and Wall 5.
During the first game of the day Wednesday, 10 Cougars scored and 11 got rebounds. Those who scored went 33 of 47 from the field, including a sizzling 28 of 35 inside the arc for 80 percent.
Delaney scored 16, Hinton and Campbell 14 each, Dillard 11 and Wall 10. Delaney was 5 of 8 from the field, including hitting both of his three-point attempts. Campbell was 7 of 7 and Dillard 5 of 5, all from short range. Hinton was 6 of 10 overall and 6 of 8 inside the circle. Collins hit 2 three-pointers and Nicholas Thomas 1.
Campbell led the way with 10 rebounds with Hinton getting 6 and Hunter Holloway 5. Also pulling down rebounds were Batten, Dillard, Delaney, Olijah Woodard, Tyler Johnson, Taylor Corbin, Wall and Thomas.
Then that evening, the Cougars beat Montgomery Central of Tennessee 68-58. Collins broke out of a long-range shooting slump by hitting 5 of 9 three-pointers. He also added a trio of two-pointers to go 8 of 13 on the night, scoring 21 points. Wall was accurate from in-close and scored 14 points. Delaney hit better from long range (2 of 3) than short and added 12 points.
Batten was 4 of 4 from the field and scored 10 points. Hinton hit all of his shots, going 2 of 2 from both the field and the line for 6 points and Dillard was 1 of 2 from the field and 3 of 5 at the line for 5 points.
As a team, the Cougars hit 18 of 26 on two-pointers and 8 of 17 on three-pointers for 60.5 percent overall.
As a result of that good shooting, there were very few offensive rebounds to be had. Delaney got 6 of the 14 rebounds.
After 10 games, five Cougars are averaging between 8.3 and 10.4 points per game, and seven are hitting 47 percent or higher from the field.
