Eleven players scored in an opening round, 40-point romp by the Logan County Cougars in the H&H Holiday Hoopfest on the weekend before Christmas, but Coach Josh Frick’s team would have loved to use three of those extra points in the championship game the next night.

The Cougars blew out visiting Trigg County 73-43 on Friday, but they couldn’t quite get over the hump Saturday in a two-point loss to a homeschool combined team from Warren County in the finals,

In that opening game, Trigg jumped out to an 8-0 lead, but the Cougars were on top 19-14 after a quarter. Most impressively, the Logan defense held the Wildcats to just five points in the second half.

Samson Hightower led the Cougars with 24 points. He was 6 of 8 from short range and hit 3 each of free throws and three-pointers. Sophomore Davis Switzer hit 5 of 8 shots from short range and added 2 three-pointers and a free throw for 18 points. Jaxon Tichenor added 8 points,

Also scoring were Olijah Woodard, Brady Hinton, Nicholas Blann, Nicholas Thomas, Maliq Ford, Jeremiah Washington, Jonathan Baker and Tyler Johnson.

In addition to spreading out the scoring, 10 Cougars got rebounds. Blann led with 9 while Hightower had 7, Hinton 6 and Tichenor 4. Also credited with one or two rebounds were Ford, Johnson, Woodard, Washington, Baker and Elijah Sells.

Switzer was named Player of the Game.

The Cougars shot well from both short range and the free throw line, and their 5 of 16 shooting from behind the arc was not particularly bad. One more trey going in, however, would have produced a championship. Thomas hit 3 of 5 long-rangers, and Samson got the other two to fall. Hinton was 6 of 6 at the line and Switzer 5 of 6.

Blann hit 4 of 6 two-pointers while Thomas was 3 of 5, Switzer 4 of 7, Tichenor 3 of 6, and Hinton 3 of 7.

Hinton and Hightower each pulled down 7 rebounds and Davis 6.

Hightower was named Player of the Game for Logan.
