LCHS announces fall schedules in year of changes

In a year of change for Logan County High School fall sports, Athletic Director Hugh McReynolds has announced the schedules for three varsity sports teams-football, volleyball and boys soccer. He says girls soccer, boys and girls cross country, and girls and boys golf schedules are still being finalized.
Major changes are new head coaches for football and volleyball along with the first varsity schedules for both soccer teams.
The coaching change is more significant in football than in volleyball. For the first time in over a decade, the Cougars have a new head coach on the gridiron. Following the resignation of long-time coach Lee Proctor, Dain Gregory, most recently of Ballard Memorial, was named coach.
Gregory faces a daunting challenge. Logan struggled to win last year despite having a prolific-passing, four-year-starting quarterback in John Logan Dockins, who is now an alumnus. Compounding the situation is the Cougars’ mandated move to Class 5A in a district with powerful Bowling Green, Warren Central and Greenwood along with Barren County. Non-district opponents will be Butler County, South Warren, Todd Central, Edmonson County, Metcalfe County and Russellville.
Although it hasn’t been officially announced, every indication is that Steven Lyne is becoming head coach of the volleyball team. He and Rob Imlay have been a coaching team along with Tina Lynch ever since the team was started in the mid-1990s. Lynch, whose Lady Cougars have been in the regional finals seven of the last eight years and won the championship on the way to the state quarterfinals in 2009, is going to coach the volleyball team at Adairville where she teaches.
Also leaving the long-time coaching quintet is Buddy Wright, who will coach the volleyball team at Olmstead where he now teaches. Staying with Lyne and Imlay is Rob’s brother, James Imlay.
Logan has played girls and boys soccer the past two seasons on first the middle school/freshman level and then as a junior varsity program. Now they’re going to be taking on the big boys and big girls. Evan Evans returns as coach of the Cougars and Daniel McCarley as coach of the Lady Cougars.
Hart County will be the first varsity opponent for the Cougar boys, both home and away. After a home scrimmage match against Heritage Christian of Hopkinsville on Aug. 2, the Cougars will play for real for the first time at Hart County on Tuesday, Aug. 16. Two days later the first home match will be against the same opponent.
The girls’ schedule has not yet been released, but the Kentucky High School Athletic Association website predicts that the Lady Cougars will play their first varsity match in history at Franklin-Simpson on Aug. 16 and that the first home contest will be Aug. 27 against Hart County, but another home match will most likely be added before then.
Another change is Logan will start a middle school softball team this year. A brief attempt was made to start one last year, but McReynolds says he is currently in the process of finalizing a schedule for that team.
