Playing in the regional championship game has become as much a part of the Logan County volleyball routine as is playing the season opener. For the
eighth time in the past nine years, the Lady Cougars were regional finalists last month. They are 1-7 in those finals, and six of those losses have
been to the Greenwood Lady Gators.
This year’s runner-up spot became a more significant accomplishment when Greenwood made history, becoming the first public school to reach the state
finals. Private schools, primarily located in Louisville, have dominated the state championship matches, and perennial power Assumption repeated as
champion this time. But for the Fourth Region champion to make history brings more prestige to this area.
No two schools have dominated any sport in the Fourth Region as have Greenwood and Logan. Between them they have won eight straight regional
championships.
In the last seven years, Logan is 107-13 in Fourth Region play. Twelve of the 13 losses have been to the Lady Gators. The only other loss during that
time was to Warren East of Aug. 29, 2008, and that year the Lady Cougars won the region and made it to the state semifinals. Overall, the Lady Cougars
are 202-65 in those seven years under coaches Tina Lynch, Steve Lyne and Rob Imlay with help from James Imlay and Buddy Wright.
Greenwood is 99-3 in regional play during those seven seasons. All three losses have been to Logan, including in the regional semifinals in ’08. Logan
won over Allen County-Scottsville for the championship that year.
