The favorites lived up to expectations in the Logan County Middle School Basketball Tournament, played at Logan County High School February 2 nd, 4th and 6th. Not only did the top-seeded Olmstead Lady Rams and Lewisburg Rangers win championships, but every
higher seed took home victories in the first four games.
Olmstead played with precision and skill in beating Adairville 43-8 in the girls finals. It was the second straight championship for the team
coached by Daniel Alvis and Chris Wilcutt. The Lady Rams shot, rebounded, passed and defended effectively and fundamentally. They did all the little
things that championship teams are trained to do.
Post player Rachel Barnett scored 6 of the Lady Rams' first 10 points, and guard Taleia Mason hit a pair of 3-pointers to give the champs
perimeter firepower. Mason finished with 12 points. Logan Williamson, who has run the offense from her point guard position in both championship
seasons and is still only a seventh grader, added 11 points while Barnet and Cierra Johnson each scored 8.
Adairville's Brianna Wooden ended a 20-0 Olmstead run with a goal at the 3:42 mark in the half. She had another bucket in the game with Laura
Hendricks and Grace McLellan added a goal each. The Lady Cardinals never gave up, playing hard until the end for coaches Todd Webb, Bill Hendricks and
Jennifer Webb.
The Lady Rams, who attended summer camp at a Georgetown College along with the Logan County varsity and junior varsity teams, had a great season.
In addition to going 10-0 against county teams, they went 2-0 against County, 1-1 vs. Hopkinsville, 1-1 vs. Warren County schools Moss and South
Warren, 2-1 vs. Owensboro Catholic, 7-0 against all other Owensboro schools, 2-1 vs. Breckinridge Middle, 1-0 vs. Butler County, 2-0 vs. Scott County,
and 7-0 vs. Georgetown schools.
The boys finals was close to the end. Auburn was leading by a point when Lewisburg's Garrison Rosser hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds
remaining. Auburn's Michael Riley, who had scored all 13 of the Tigers' first-half points, hit a free throw as Rosser fouled out with 11 seconds. Tiger
coach Josh Hall called a timeout between free throws, and Riley missed the second. Dalton Furlow grabbed the rebound and hit both free throws to make
the lead three. Taylor Owens, who appeared to be Auburn's designated shooter, missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Owens' points in the game came from the
foul line. He hit a pair of free throws twice within 11 seconds to pull the Tigers within two both times, and Riley hit two to tie the game at 28-28.
The Rangers, who were coached by Gerald Tabb, Ronnie Rosser and Travis Anderson, built a five-point lead to start the third quarter on a 3-pointer
by Quinton Nash and a goal by Hunter Crafton. Nash had a super game, including blocking some of the Tigers' long-range shots.
Rosser, who had scored 14 in a close win over Adairville in the semifinals, scored 15 in this one. Crafton added 10 and Nash 6.
The Saturday afternoon semifinal games matching Adairville and Auburn were both close. The Lady Cardinals won 27-22 in overtime with Laura
Hendricks hitting a 3-pointer and Lauren Batten and Brooke Barnes also scoring in OT. Batten led Coach Todd Webb's winners with 10 points.
Kaitlynne Fisher led Auburn with 12 points while Sierra Morrow had 6. Fisher hit a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter, and Morrow scored on a
drive to pull Auburn to within one at the break.
The fourth quarter was very low scoring. Morrow gave the Lady Tigers the lead by hitting a 3-pointer with 4:30 remaining, but Auburn didn't score
again in regulation. Lady Card Batten hit the only other field goal of the quarter to tie it with 50 seconds remaining.
In overtime, Batten hit a shot and Hendricks hit a 3-pointer with 57.2 seconds. Auburn's Fisher responded with her third trey of the game to pull
her team to within two, but Barnes scored on an assist from Batten, and Ann-Meguiar Bouldin sealed it with a free throw at 11.7 seconds.
Riley of Auburn and sixth grader Austin Rayno of Adairville each scored 17 in the boys game, but Riley got more help in the Tigers' 36-31 win.
Rayno, who had scored 19 points in a game the year before as a fifth grader, hit four 3-pointers, all but one in the 2nd quarter, to bring the
Cardinals back from a 23-12 halftime deficit to a 29-25 lead, but Owens made two steals and hit a layup and a 3-pointer to put the Tigers up. Point
guard Jackson Allen hit a pair of treys for the Cardinals, but his foul trouble hurt his team. When he was in the game, Adairville fared much better
than when he was on the bench. He was good at getting the ball to Rayno or hitting the open shot himself. With him out, Rayno had to do more ball
handling and less shooting.
In the nightcap Saturday, Olmstead beat Lewisburg 48-29 with eight girls scoring, led by Johnson's 10, Taylor Borders' 8, Williamson's 7
and Mason's 6. Breanna Baptiste topped Coach Anderson's LMS team with 8. Lauren Burnett and Brittany Wilhelm each scored 4.
The Lewisburg boys led 10-0 after a quarter with Rosser scoring 7. Then Furlow scored the first 5 points of the second period to make it 15-0.
Olmstead roared back with Garcia scoring all 11 of his points in the second half. OMS trailed only 27-17 when Coach Tabb's Rangers rebuilt their
15-point lead. Quentin Nash hit a 3-pointer and Jordan Hendrix scored two quick buckets; LMS led 34-19. The Rams' Andrew Martin hit a trey and
Garcia put in two quick buckets, but the Rangers finished the game 12-3 for a 46-29 win. Rosser led the winners with 14, Nash 12 and Furlow 9. Dalton
Nash finished second to Garcia with 7 for OMS.
In the opening round Thursday, the Lewisburg girls eliminated Coach Nick Hildabrand's Lady Bears 42-13. Jordan Goss scored 17 and Breanna Baptiste
14 for LMS. Amber Carroll, Desirae Powell and Kaleigh Robertson led Chandlers.
The Olmstead Rams of Coaches Todd Gill and Justin Adams won 43-26 over Chandlers. Garcia had 16 for the winners. Coach Stanley Fleming's Bears
were led by Tristan Armstrong with 10, Jordan Blick 7and Kaleb Justice 7.
