The Russellville Panthers and Lady Panthers are enjoying late spring weather in the early spring as they play softball, baseball, and tennis plus
running track.
Coaches range from rookie to veteran in the RHS Athletic Department. Matt Tipton is starting his 38th season as the girls track coach,
perhaps serving as the current longest tenured coach with one team and one school in the state. He may also be the best coach of relay events in the
state.
Lou Kendall, who became the Panther baseball coach in the 1980s, is in what is expected to be his final season on the job. He has stated his
intention to retire from teaching. The Panthers play at Kelly Russell Field, which got a major facelift a few seasons ago.
Dennis Sydnor, who was a key member of Coach Floyd Burnsed's 1975 Class A state champion track team in 1975, is back for another season as RHS
boys track coach. The new RHS track is beautifully done with the blacktop trimmed in gold.
Sandra Eggleston Brown, who won the regional tennis singles championship in back-to-back years in the mid-1970s, continues as the boys and girls
tennis coach. Magnificent new tennis courts opened the same year as the track.
On the other hand, Greg Meacham, who was a three-sports athlete for the Panthers about the same time Coach Brown and Coach Sydnor were playing for
RHS, is the new softball coach. Not only is he rebuilding the team, but he's worked diligently to raise the field to a standard similar to the
excellence of the other three playing areas.
