Here are some basics on the Logan County Archery Program, from the first year at LCHS, to this year.
The coaching staff started with Charlie Richardson and Jeanie Moore at LCHS (who had also started the same program at Lewisburg Elementary and Middle School a few years earlier.)
The LCHS coaching staff, at this time, is made up of five people. Head Coach Jeanie Moore, and Assistant Head Coach Chris Cassity both are employed by the school system. Three other coaches have been in the program for some years. They are Melissa Brumfield , Doug Bagby, and James Taylor. Jeanie and I are both BAI (Basic Archery Instructor) - certified from NASP (National Archery in School Program), and just recently certified with KHSAA, since this is the first year of archery as a sanctioned sport for the state of Kentucky. The other coaches are BAI certified and working on the KHSAA class program to be certified with KHSAA.
The archery program has been at the high school for over seven years and is going strong, featuring many students with great shooting skills.
We started this year with the first practice on Dec. 3 with a team of 36 students until the naming of the main team for the school on Jan. 11. The main team consists of 24 students who will complete the tournament year out. The following is a team roster by classes:
Seniors - Christina Framer, Tabby Valentine, Austin Smotherman and Kaleb Taylor
Juniors - Amanda Kieth, Marah Harris, Jacob Brumfield, Lane Woodward, Jon-Clarc Todd, Cody Meacham, Morgan Bagby, Derek Vaughn
Sophomores - Jenny Cobert, Kendra Chesnut, Jackson Wells, Nicholas Stuart, Joshua Stratton, Andrew Gregory, Cody Goodman, Mason Turley
Freshmen - Christian Lynch, Autumn Costellow, William Bagby, Ryan Hudson
We are currently working on upcoming tournaments. We will be at the Adairville Tournament this Saturday; Region 4 Tournament at Metcalfe High School in Edmonton March 1-2; at the Kentucky State Tournament March 18-19at Louisville at the downtown Convention Center; and the National Tournament March 10-11 -at Freedom Hall in Louisville.
The top three high schools at Regional automatically go to state, and then to nationals. At nationals any school can compete, if they wish to, against schools from across the United States as long as there are open placements available.
At this time we have competed in five tournaments around the county and at Trigg County. At this time of the year we have four 1st place trophies and one 2nd place from Trigg County, and we are planning on a lot more First place trophies to come this year.
