Logan County’s basketball teams bounced back in a big way the night after losing a doubleheader to visiting Russellville, pulling off a twin
killing of Trigg teams at the LCHS gym. The Cougar boys won 81-63 in the Saturday opener, and the Lady Cougars pulled off a 68-49 victory in the
nightcap.
Senior Chris Covington had a super game for the Cougar boys, scoring 28 points, blocking 5 shots and shutting down Wildcat star Jonathan King in
the last three quarters. King, who was averaging 26 points a game, hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter, but Cougar Coach Harold Tackett went to a
box and one with Covington chasing King, who scored only nine more points the remainder of the game.
Two other Cougars joined Covington with 20 or more points. Junior point guard Seth McReynolds had 22 and freshman Twin Lancaster 20. Also scoring
were Jonathan Barbee, Reuben Rawlings-Watson, Brett Sowell and Derrod Blakey.
Trigg’s record fell to 13-10. The Cougars improved to 4-16.
The Lady Cougars blew open a close game in the third period, saw their lead cut in half and then won convincingly.
Up by seven points at the intermission, the Lady Cougars appeared to be in trouble when Sarah Speck drew her third foul just 12 seconds into the
second half. Coach Scot MacAllister elected to leave her in the game, and she wasn’t assessed her fourth personal until midway through the fourth
quarter. By then Logan was up by 16.
The Lady Cougars led by 21 at 48-27 late in the third period, but Trigg County cut the margin to 10 at 51-41. Finally Speck hit Logan’s first field
goal in four minutes, and Jenna Wilson swished a 3-pointer. Two baskets by Ann Dorris made the lead 62-43, and Wilson’s basket put the home team up and
way at 64-45.
Wilson, who sank some crucial free throws in the second half, finished with 20 points and five steals, and Speck added 16 points and an impressive
17 rebounds. Dorris, who drew a couple of key charges, had 7.
The Lady Cougars improved their record to 10-9. Trigg fell to 5-13.
