Hunter Britt pitched a one-hit shutout of Butler County while walking only one Bear and striking out eight in recent Logan County home baseball action. The win came a day after a tough 2-1 loss to visiting Graves County.
In the win over Butler, Caleb Bruner had three hits, scored two runs and drove in two. Ian Woodall added a couple of hits while driving in one and scoring one. Also singling were Joe Holliday, Jacob Wood, Matt Harper, Jackson Campbell and Tucker Baldwin.
Wood, Harper and Campbell were credited with RBIs. Wood, who reached on an error and was hit by a pitch in addition to his own hit, scored three runs. Also scoring were Holliday, Baldwin and Harper. Baldwin walked twice with Campbell and Harper getting a free pass each. Michael Riley reached on an error.
Freshman Rex Henderson got the lone Butler County hit and Cody Casteel the only walk off Britt. The only other Bear baserunner came when Henderson reached on an error, but Britt got Blake Graham to ground into a double play. Eddie Phelps took the loss for Coach John Casteel’s team. Trevor Parker recorded the final out.
Graves County 2, Logan County 1
Logan County lost despite Joe Holliday's solid performance from both the mound and the plate. Joe Holliday got on base two times in the game for Logan County. He doubled in the third inning and walked. Holliday shut down Graves County while he was on the hill. Holliday gave up just two hits, allowed two earned runs, walked three and struck out seven during his seven innings of work.
Graves County went up for good in the first, scoring two runs on an RBI double by Hayden and a sacrifice fly by Puckett. Logan County scored its only run of the game on a single by Wood in the third inning, bringing in Campbell, who was courtesy running for catcher Woodall. Bruner joined Woodall in reaching on errors. Bruner and Campbell each stole a base.
Holliday’s double and Woods’ single were the only hits Holliday worked the only walk.
Graves County scored its only two runs in the first inning on an RBI double by Justin Hayden and a sacrifice fly by Peyton Puckett. Clayton Carrico got the win by throwing one-hit, one-run ball in five innings while walking just one and striking out eight Cougars. Eamon Hannan pitched the final two innings, getting four of the six outs on strikeouts for the save.
It was the second straight start in which Holliday pitched
great ball but took the loss when the Cougar offense couldn’t get going.
