Cougars edge Greenwood for 24th win

Jacob Wood scored on Caleb Bruner’s sacrifice fly, and reliever Matt Harper shut out the Greenwood Gators in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Logan County Cougars a 6-5 win in the regular season finale for the defending regional champs.

Harper also had three hits and finished with a pair of RBIs. He doubled in the third inning and singled in the fifth and sixth innings.

Joe Holliday, Luke Woodall and starting pitcher Michael Riley each had two hits while Bruner and Hunter Britt each singled. Bruner’s hit was a double. Wood, Harper and Jackson Campbell each got one of the three walks Greenwood pitching gave up. Wood, Bruner, Campbell, Luke Woodall and Bradley Taylor scored. Riley had an RBI, and Ian Woodall reached on an error.

Riley pitched the first six innings. He gave up five hits and three walks. Only one of the three runs charged to him was earned. Harper was touched for three hits and two earned runs, but he didn’t walk anyone and struck out two. Harper was the winning pitcher.

John Halcomb had three hits for Coach Jason Jaggers’ Gators. Michael Justice adedd two each of hits and runs. Noah Edmonson doubled and scored two runs. He was one of three Gators to reach on Cougar errors, and he also stole a base.

Nick Sanders pitched the first four innings and gave up just one run on four hits and a walk. Justice was hit hard in the 1.2 innings he worked. Tyler Sago pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

Coach Ethan Meguiar’s Cougars finished with a 24-9 record, including 15-6 in the region and 5-1 in the district. The Cougars play Todd Central (5-20) at 5:30 Monday at LCHS. The second game matches Russellville (19-15) and Franklin-Simpson (24-10).
