Logan County Babe Ruth kicked off the 2014 season Thursday, May 29 with a doubleheader. Winners were the Mean Greens and the Sky Blues.
Winning 9-3, the Mean Greens of coaches Jay and Ben Wright got a double, a single and an RBI from Austin Rayno, and two hits from Chandler Silvey. D.J. Beard doubled and had two RBIs. Jack Wright, Lane Barry, McKinley Griggs and Bradley Taylor each drove in a run.
For the Big Reds of coaches Travis Steward and Terry Crafton got a big offensive game from Hunter Crafton, who tripled, doubled and singled and had two RBIs. Jagger Hales, Jackson Steward, Ryan Hudson and T.K. Hampton all singled.
Taylor was the winning pitcher, giving up five hits and two walks while striking out five in three innings. Evan Humphrey pitched a pair of innings, giving up a pair each of hits and walks. He struck out one.
Dillion Porter worked two innings for the Big Reds and gave up a hit and two walks. Crafton worked two innings, allowing five hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Steward pitched an inning, totaling two each of walks and strikeouts.
Sky Blues, coached by David Woodall and Frank Lillert, beat the Navys 9-6 as Mason Parker and Devon Smith each got two hits, Jordan Blick doubled, and Clayte Weathers, Kobe Wall and Caleb Justice each singled. Weathers and Smith each drove in two runs with Justice, Wall, Blick and Parker adding an RBI each.
For the Navys of coaches Shea Ross and Matt Roche, Jackson Campbell tripled, Ethan Smock doubled, and Ashton Ross and Devon Roche each got a hit. Smock had two RBIs with Zach Decker, Ross and Campbell each getting an RBI.
Tommy Kron of Sky was the winning pitcher. In three innings, he gave up two hits and three walks with six strikeouts. Blick worked two innings, allowing two hits, a walk and a hit batsman. He struck out four.
Colin Sharp went two innings for the Navys, going two innings and allowing eight hits and two walks while fanning two Blues. Smock also pitched two innings. He didn’t allow a hit, but he walked two and hit a batter while striking out two.
Each team needs a sponsor for this season. Those sponsors will be listed in all stories after they come aboard. Gerald Printing is helping sponsor the league with shirts, according to one of the League leaders, Renee Stratton.
