The Logan County Middle School softball team started the 2014 season strong by sweeping three doubleheaders. Details of those games follow:
Aug. 12 vs Moss Middle School at Buchanan Park. First doubleheader of season.
In Game 1 Sydney Lee and Kaylin Page pitched a combined no-hitter for the 17-0 win in just two innings. Lee struck out all 3 batters in the top of the first on only 11 pitches. Page struck out 3 of 5 in the second to seal the no-hitter. Paige VanZant, Page, Sarah Beth Hale, Brea Croslin, Jillian McClellan, Rosie Kerchinski, Lee, Blayke Bingham and Hannah Cron all reached based in every at-bat in this two-inning game.
Game 2 of the Moss Middle Doubleheader was won 15-0 in 3 innings with a combined Abby Hinton/Sarah Beth Hale perfect game from the mound. Hinton struck out the first six batters, and Hale retired the final three in order to finish the perfect game. Hale was also 2 for 3 at the plate with a 2-RBI triple, and Lee smashed a 2-RBI double and walked twice. The two fifth graders, Shelby Gettings and Lilly Newman, got a rough welcome to middle school play with both “taking one or two for the team,” but they both scored their first runs as Lady Cougars. With the look of these two you can bet there are many, many more runs to come in their future.
Aug. 14 at Todd County Middle School
In Game 1 Lee pitched a 5-inning complete game shutout as the Cougars topped the Rebels 10-0. Hale, Kennedy Nichols and McClellan had big RBIs on extra base hits in this one. VanZant, Page and McClellan all scored two runs.
In Game 2 at Todd County Abby Hinton pitched all three innings for a big 6-4 win over the home standing Rebels. VanZant got it done at the plate by going 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI. Kerchinski made one of the best catches we’ve seen in right field to help keep runs off the board in the first inning and that was a big key in this one.
Aug. 19 First Home Doubleheader vs University Heights Academy
In Game 1 Sydney Lee moved her record to 3-0 with a complete game 6-1 win in five innings pitched. The infield of Vanzant, Croslin, Page and McClellan gave Lee many solid defensive plays throughout the game. Croslin was also great at the plate with a 3 for 3 effort and it looks like Kennedy Nichols is really starting to get it going with a 2 for 3 night at the plate that included a 2-RBI double.
Game 2 versus University Heights was a great one with Abby Hinton on the mound for the Cougars. The Cougars were up 1 -0 going into the 3rd when the Racers put 4 runs on the board that included the first homer we’ve seen this season. Showing much heart the Cougars responded in the bottom of the third when a single by Blayke Bingham started the one out Rally. After a walk to VanZant the Cougars had three consecutive singles by Page, Hale and Croslin that put the Cougars in the lead 5-4. Croslin then scored on a wild pitch to make the final score 6-4 before the game was called on time limit four batters later. Hinton’s record now matches Lee at a perfect 3-0.
After six games, the Lady Cougars’ record was 6-0.
They are planning to play in a round robin tournament this weekend at Christian County.
