Lady Cougars continue playing tough schedule

The Logan County Lady Cougars brought home a 2-3 record from the prestigious Queens of the Court volleyball tournament at Central Hardin High School of Elizabethtown this weekend. That left the defending regional champs with a 5-5 mark on the season.

Wins were over Boyle County and North Hardin. The losses came to host Central Hardin, Southwestern of Pulaski County, and Elizabethtown.

In a 25-15, 25-22 win over Boyle County, Chanler Steenbergen fired 8 aces while she and Kapresha Powell had 4 kills each. Karrah Cron had 7 assists and LeeAnn Coots 4. Amber Carroll had 8 service receptions and Steenbergen 7. Sierra Morrow and Powell were credited with a block each while Carroll had 8 digs and Coots 4.

The closest win came 25-20, 21-25, 15-12 over North Hardin, which finished with a 3-2 record. Steenbergen got 9 kills on 23 attacks. Chelsey Hopkins converted 4 of her 7 attacks into kills, and Kerra Cornist had 3 kills on 5 attacks. Catherine Miller, Cron, Steenbergen and Carroll each had an ace. Brianna Wooden blocked 8 shots and Cornist 7. Carroll piled up 14 digs with Steenbergen getting 9. Cron led with 19 assists and Coots contributed 7. Carroll returned 17 serves and Powell 11.

A close loss came to Coach Bart Catlett’s 4-2 Elizabethtown team, which handed Southwestern its only loss. The Lady Panthers won 23-25, 25-17, 15-12. Jaclyn Batchelor had 11 kills in 23 attacks; no one else was close. Carroll and Steenbergen each fired 2 aces. Wooden blocked 6 shots, Powell and Cornist 4 each and Steenbergen 3. Carroll had 10 digs, Miller 9 and Cron 7. Cron added 9 assists and Coots 6. Carroll returned 18 serves and Powell 13.

Host Central Hardin won its first three matches, including one against Coach Steven Lyne’s Logan team Friday, but lost its last two. Against Central Hardin, Maranda Wright and Steenbergen each had 7 kills. Molly Latham, Cron and Steenbergen each fired an ace. Wright and Cornist each blocked 2 shots. Carroll led with 15 digs. Latham had 8 assists, Coots 5 and Cron 4. Carroll had 18 service receptions, Powell 11 and Miller 8.

Southwestern of Pulaski County—coached by Jerry Cottrell and Courtney Compton—finished 5-1, the only loss coming in split decisions with E’town. Steenbergen had 5 kills on 24 attacks and Wright 2 kills on 7. Carroll was credited with 2 aces with Steenbergen and Miller getting 1 each.  Cornist blocked 6 shots with Wooden and Powell getting 2 each. Carroll had 12 digs, Cron 6 and Miller 5. Coots had 5 assists and Cron the other 4. Carroll returned 13 serves with Powell and Steenbergen returning 8 each and Miller 6.
