Two teams both hungry for a win will face tonight when the Logan County Cougars go to Scottsville to play the Allen County-Scottsville at patriot Field, beginning at 7 p.m.
The Patriots are 1-4 and the Cougars 0-5, so each team sees this as a winnable game.
AC-S got its win against visiting Marshall County on Sept. 5 by an impressive 56-14 margin. Junior Nick Brown, who has sat out of football the past two seasons, rushed for 105 yards on 8 carries, scoring a trio of touchdowns. Sophomore Jaylon McPeak, who handles kickoff returns, managed 30 yards on 7 of his carries but upped his average on a 65-yard romp. Junior quarterback Jesse Bow was 5 of 15 for 39 yards. That win broke an 8-game losing streak for the Patriots.
Last week, the Patriots lost a heartbreaker, falling 21-20 to Marion County in overtime at Lebanon. Junior Dakota Sluss, who also punts, led AC-S with 35 yards on 3 carries. Senior Colton Oakes completed two passes for a touchdown and a touchdown, rushed for 31 yards and made 6 tackles.
The defensive leader is senior Quinn Towery, who had 12 tackles against Marion County and leads the team with 41 tackles, according to Allen County Schools Public Information Director Donnie Meador.
Senior kicker Cainan Cox is 14 of 15 on extra points this season. The 15th was the one he missed in last week’s overtime.
Coach Brad Hood has a record of 52-46. AC-S is 230-257 all-time in varsity games.
Logan County has a new head coach in veteran Steve Duncan, a proven winner. The team has continued to improve all season, as was manifested in last week’s 35-0 district loss to visiting Greenwood. The Cougars moved the ball consistently, much of it coming from the rushing of Cole Stanley, who has become the featured back in the running attack.
He almost scored early in the third quarter, but the officials ruled he was down on what sportscaster Andy Woodall called the one-inch line. Logan fumbled on the next play to end the drive.
Last week’s game was the first time this year that the Cougars have not gotten behind by 36 points, which initiates a “running clock.” In fact, it was only the second time in the last season and a half the team has avoided that speedy finish. Last year’s exception came when then-coach Dain Gregory’s team fell 48-21 to Allen County. Bow was the only Patriot who had significant statistics in that one.
Stanley rushed 19 times in the game, 18 of them without a loss. He finished with 95 yards for an average of 5.0 per carry. Luke Woodall added 34 yards on 14 carries, and freshman Sawyer Hopkins got varsity rushing experience, gaining 2 yards on 2 carries.
Quarterback Tyler Wright was 2 for 8 for 23 years passing, and Kaleb Coursey caught 3 passes for 45 yards.
Nate Offutt was the leading tackler with 9, including 6 solos. Billy Vick had 5 solos among his 6 tackles. Chase Williamson added 5 tackles and J.B, Decker 4. Jonathan Oliver added a fumble recovery to his 5 tackles.
