The Bowling Green Hornets, who will begin their third year in the Central Basketball Association, have announced that their home games for the upcoming 2015 season will be held at Logan County High School in Russellville.
Through the support of the newly-elected Superintendent for Logan County Public Schools, Dr. Kevin Hub, as well as Logan County High School Principal Casey Jaynes, the Hornets have begun a mutual partnership between the school system and the minor league basketball team.
Students across Logan County, specifically those involved in journalism, business marketing, video production, and athletics, will use various internship opportunities with the Hornets to gain practical experience in their respective fields at a young age. Furthermore, the Hornets are expected to host several resume-writing workshops, effective communication seminars, and career and educational planning discussions to help promote positive growth and aspirations within the student body at Logan County High School.
The last two seasons, the Hornets played their home games at Russellville High School, where they helped provide internship opportunities for many students, as well as contributing to the school itself with the renovation of the school’s concession stand. The management for the Hornets are very grateful for the support provided by Russellville City Schools Superintendent Leon Smith and Russellville High School Principal Kim McDaniel during the last two years.
In addition to working with Logan County High School, the Hornets will again be a supporting partner for the Logan County Middle School Basketball Tournament, which is underway this week. For the second consecutive year, the Hornets will honor the individual participants and coaches for the winners and runners-up of both the boys and girls teams from the County Tournament, with a trophy presentation at half-time of the Hornets home opener on April 18.
The Hornets look forward to the start of a successful new partnership with Logan County Public Schools, and hope that the team breeds the next generation of successful professionals through its various planned internship and educational programs.
All four Hornets home games during the upcoming Central Basketball Association season will be played at Logan County High School: Saturday, April 18 versus Chattanooga; Saturday, April 25 versus Springfield; Saturday, May 2 versus Fort Wayne; and Saturday, May 9 versus Peoria.
The Hornets are currently coached by Russellville-native Nathan Thompson, who will be entering his second full season as the team’s head coach. Thompson and the Hornets organization have recruited nearly 30 former NCAA and NAIA Division-I athletes on their rosters the last two seasons, and have helped 13 players receive professional basketball contracts overseas during that span. The Hornets have also had eight former Western Kentucky Hilltoppers play for the club, in which six of those athletes subsequently signed international contracts; the latest of which was former WKU forward O’Karo Akamune, who began his professional basketball career in Denmark this winter with the Horsholm 79ers.
