A total team involvement was evident Monday when the Logan County Lady Cougars won their seventh game in their last eight starts by trouncing Trigg County 68-32.
Coach Finley Baird used several girls who have been significant role players as featured performers in this game, and a couple of them responded in a big way.
Junior Rachel Barnett scored 22 points, pulled down 7 rebounds, totaled 3 deflections, added 2 each of steals and blocked shots, and added an assist from the inside. She hit 11 of 18 shots.
Classmate Cierra Johnson hit all 6 of her free throw attempts, scoring 14 points, had 4 each of assists, steals and deflections, and pulled down 3 boards. She plays primarily on the perimeter.
Reserves Emily Jones, Kechera Palacios and Ann-Meguiar Bouldin also scored.
Barnett was especially needed, since starting center Brooke Barnes, who has been dealing with injuries, sat out the game.
Among the regulars, Kapreshia Powell scored 9 points, tied Barnett for rebounding honors with 7, and made 3 steals. Maegann Hardison hit a trio of 3-pointers on the way to 12 points and added 6 assists and 4 deflections. Torrie Pollard had 3 each of assists and steals along with 2 blocked shots. Taleia Mason contributed 6 deflections and 4 steals.
The lopsided victory was the 14th in the last 16 games for the Lady Cougars and their third win in four tries in seven days.
The week began with a 56-35 win at Barren County. Pollard and Powell each scored 17 and Barnes 12. Pollard hit a couple of 3-pointers along the way. Barnes had 7 rebounds and Hardison 5.
Madison Hume scored 13, Reanna Poynter 7 and Taylor Davis 6 for Coach Brad Johnson’s Trojanettes.
Next came a 53-42 loss to Daviess County in a game that saw the Lady Cougars hit only 28.8 percent (17 of 59). Powell scored 14 points. She and Barnes each had 8 rebounds. Hardison hit 3 of her 6 attempts from 3-point range to finish with 11 points. Barnett had 6 points and 4 rebounds. Mason had 3 assists and deflections before following out. Pollard had 5 deflections, 4 each of blocks and steals and 3 assists.
Sydni Saalwaechter scored 17 points for the Lady Panthers, 11 of them coming on the free throws she hit among her 17 attempts. Skylar Walden added 14. The home team shot 32 free throws and Logan 10.
Daviess County is coached by former WKU Lady Topper standout guard Natalie Powers.
Two days later, the Lady Cougars beat another Owensboro team, Apollo, 45-37. This time Logan shot 35 free throws, hitting 19. Hardison was 10 of 11 at the line and finished with 17 points. Pollard had 10 points while recording 4 deflections, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots. Mason and Barnett each had a team-high 6 rebounds.
Coach Arlando Johnson’s E-gals were led by JNayah Hall’s 12 points and Tia Shelton’s 11.
The Lady Cougars, who have already secured the first seed in the district tournament, play host to district rival Russellville Friday in the Clash of the Cats.
