A strong hitting and pitching performance from Meagan Ferguson wasn’t enough for the Logan County Lady Cougars to beat visiting Franklin-Simpson Wednesday as Coach Michael Crawford’s team suffered an 8-2 district defeat.
Ferguson racked up two RBIs on two hits for Logan. She doubled in Torrie Pollard, who had singled, in the first inning, and she singled in Pollard, who had singled again, in the sixth inning for Logan’s only two runs.
Rachel Barnett joined Pollard and Ferguson with two hits each, while Brea Croslin and Reagan Cole added one each. Logan out-hit F-S 8-6.
Ferguson shut down Franklin Simpson while she was on the rubber. Franklin Simpson managed just one hit off her, and she allowed runs and walked none during her one inning of relief.
Eighth grader Madison Davis got the win for Franklin Simpson. She allowed two runs over seven innings. She struck out 10, walked none and surrendered eight hits. She is the daughter of LCHS graduate Beth Ann Neal Davis.
Franklin Simpson was sparked by Jessie Bellar and Kelsey Cline, who teamed up for four hits and three RBIs for Coach Matthew Willhite’s Lady Cats.
Macy Meacham started on the mound for the Lady Cougars. She allowed eight runs in six innings, walked three and struck out one.
This was the second straight district loss for the Lady Cougars and their seventh in a row after winning their first three games.
Butler County 3, Lady Cougars 0
Ferguson was a workhorse in the circle for Logan County. Ferguson pitched six innings and allowed two earned runs, four hits and no walks while striking out two.
Kassie Phelps got it done on the rubber on the way to a win for Coach John Embry’s Lady Bears. She tossed seven innings of shutout ball, struck out four, walked none and gave up one hit.
That lone hit was when Croslin singled as the leadoff batter in the first inning. She went to second on a passed ball, and got to third on Pollard’s ground out, but that proved to be the only baserunner the Lady Cougars could manage.
Butler County went up for good in the first, scoring one run on a groundout by Maddie McKinney.
Butler County got one-run rallies in the third inning and the sixth. In the third, Butler County scored on an RBI double by McKinney, driving in Olivia Jones.
Ohio County 13, Lady Cougars 3
Despite Pollard's 2-3 performance at the plate on March 27, Logan County took a 13-3 loss on the road at the hands of Ohio County. The Lady Eagles never trailed after scoring seven runs in the first on a two-run double by Seaira Goodman, two errors, and a two-run single by Myka Lindsey.
Three runs in the top of the fifth helped Logan close its deficit to 9-3. An RBI double by Croslin, an RBI triple by Pollard, and a sacrifice fly by Ferguson gave Logan County Cougars Varsity life.
Jillian McLellan walked to start the rally. After an out, Croslin doubled in McLellan, Pollard tripled in Croslin, and Pollard scored on Ferguson’s sacrifice fly.
Cleanup hitter Sierra Morrow got the only other hit for the Lady Cougars. Sydney Lee, Croslin and McLellan walked.
Eight batters got hits for Coach Steve Segers’ team with Paige Smith getting two.
