Last night, a huge throng turned out to watch grown men play football at Rhea Stadium. Tonight, adult men will play semi-professional basketball at Logan County High School.
If tonight’s game is anything like the Bowling Green Hornets’ three-point win last Saturday or the Alumni Clash of the Cats in football last night, those attending are in for a treat.
The Hornets went up 94-91 last week on a three-point goal by the league’s leading scorer, Teraes Clemmons, with 17.5 seconds remaining. After a series of mishaps for both teams, including a pair of missed free throws by the Hornets’ Damarius Smith with 1.5 seconds, the Railsplitters’ Jonathan Adams shot from long distance. The tying bucket would have sent the game into overtime, but it went in, went down but them popped back out, ending the game.
Tonight, the Bowling Green Hornets are back in action at home as they face off against the visiting Springfield Sentinels at 7 at Logan County High School.
Those attending can see former NCAA Division-I players, such as the Central Basketball Association's leading scorer Teraes Clemmons (Jacksonville State), the league's third leading scorer Spencer Perrin (Eastern Kentucky), and the debut of local star, Brandon Harris (Western Kentucky), as they look to showcase their talent in order to land an international contract. Former Lindsey Wilson players DeAntra Scott and Kalen Kimberland play important roles.
“Big night tonight as well as the winners/runners-up from this year's Logan County Middle School Basketball Tournament will be honored at halftime for a second consecutive year. It should be a great atmosphere, and it's no coincidence that the Bowling Green Hornets have the BEST HOME RECORD in the CBA in the last three seasons,” says owner Waseem Moorad. “We have the best fans, the most passionate crowd, and a Hornets' Nest that makes opposing players nervous. Let's get another win, and another strong home-court advantage tonight!”
The doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are free for students 18 and under and only $5 for adults.
Olmstead’s teams, coached by Todd Gill and Daniel Alvis, will be honored as middle school champions. Auburn’s teams, coached by Josh Hall and Gary Campbell, were both finalists.
At last week’s game, a baby crawl was the featured attraction at halftime. Benjamin Clemmons, the little brother of the Hornets’ star, was the winner. One of the contestants was Kendall Thompson, daughter of Hornets head coach Nathan Thompson and his wife Laura.
J.D. Menser returns as the team’s mascot, Buzz. The grandson of Norm and Janet Menser of Russellvile is a former Big Red at WKU.
Robby McLellan and Billy Joe Coleman of Logan County operate electronics at the score table. Eddie Brooks, who can be found working at most public events in the Russellville area, assisted in a variety of areas.
LCHS graduates Trey Turner and Barry Bilyeu officiated, as did former Todd Central and Hornets player and coach, Andrae Woodard.
The LCHS soccer teams managed the gates and concession stands. Principal Casey Jaynes was the liason between the school and the Hornets organization.
