A 9-5 softball win over Metcalfe County has been the highlight of recent action for the Logan County Lady Cougars.
Junior first baseman Rachel Barnett went four for four at the plate, Sydney Lee had two hits and four RBIs, and Paige Jones pitched the win. She gave up six hits and five walks while striking out three. Barnett scored a run and added an RBI.
After the Lady Hornets took a 1-0 lead of Madison Milam’s double, the Lady Cougars tied it in the second on consecutive singles by Reagan Cole, Jones and Barnett with courtesy runner Haleigh Duncan scoring the run. In the third, Sierra Morrow reached on an error and scored on Lee’s sacrifice fly.
Coach Michael Crawford’s team put together a five-run fourth inning. Barnett and Brea Croslin singled, Macy Meacham reached on an error, Meagan Ferguson and Morrow singled, and Lee doubled.
In the sixth inning, Morrow reached on an error, Lee singled, and with two outs, Barnett got her fourth hit.
The Lady Cougars loaded the bases in the first inning when Torrie Pollard and Ferguson singled before Morrow reached on an error, but it was the lone time all game that Lee didn’t come through at the plate. Morrow was on base all four times she came to the plate and scored three runs.
Kelsey White and Milam each had two hits for Coach Peter DiStefano’s Lady Hornets.
Butler County 8, Lady Cougars 6
The Lady Cougars scored five runs in the seventh inning to send the game into an extra inning, but Coach John Embry’s Lady Bears scored two runs in the eighth on an error and an RBI single by Maddie McKinney, who had four hits and four RBIs.
In that productive seventh, Barnett led off with a single, Brea Croslin doubled, Pollard singled, Ferguson doubled, Morrow singled and Lee doubled. A pattern had developed there. But they didn’t get the last single they needed.
Morrow doubled and scored in the second inning on Lee’s groundout. Cole singled, Tristan Hales walked and Barnett singled, but only the one run resulted.
Barnett had three hits and Pollard and Morrow each had two. Lee drove in three runs and Ferguson two.
Meacham pitched the entire eight innings. She gave up 18 hits but no walks while striking out three.
Carrie Cardwell and Abigail Fry each had three hits in support of McKinney for the Lady Bears with Madison Clark, Cheyenne White and Kassie Phelps each getting two hits.
McLean County 9, Lady Cougars 6
In a battle of teams called Lady Cougars, McLean County jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game at LCHS. Meacham gave up the five runs on just one hit and one walk, and that hit was a single. Logan made three errors in the inning and had to fight back the entire game.
Crawford’s team got two runs back in the bottom of the inning. Croslin walked, Pollard doubled and Ferguson singled them in. In the second Rosie Kerchenski reached on an error with two outs, Croslin walked again, and Meacham singled in Kerchenski.
The fourth inning found Croslin singling, Meacham walking, and Pollard and Ferguson singling with Croslin scoring the fourth run. Another single run scored in the fifth. Cole led off with a single and Barnett followed with one herself. Kerchenski walked to load the bases, and Cole scored on Croslin’s RBI walk. Meacham hit into a double play, though, that resulted in Kerchenski being out at the plate.
Barnett walked in the seventh and scored the final run for the home team. Croslin—a seventh grader—reached for the fifth straight at bat, this time on an error. Pollard walked and Ferguson singled in Croslin.
Ferguson had three hits and four RBIs. Pollard and Cole each had two hits.
Only four of the nine runs Meacham allowed were earned. She gave up six hits and four walks while striking out six.
Chloe Melloy had two hits for Coach Tabby Morris’ winners. She scored two runs, as did Savanna Deyoung and Robbi Morris. Lauren Hoover pitched the win.
