Several young Lady Cougars are competing in the state Class 3A track meet in Lexington following their success in the regional meet in Lexington last Friday. Coach Greg Howard says they “flexed their muscle in regional championships.”
Even though the Lady Cougars finished fourth in the region, they still scored well. “The other schools just have so many girls on their team, it’s ridiculous!” Howard says. “We were two points out of third, and we scored well. The events we were in, we competed and scored a great deal of points. The problem is we just don’t have enough girls to compete in many of the other events.”
The race of the night was definitely the girls 4 X 400M Relay. Logan County’s team was ranked third in the region behind powerhouses North Hardin and Central Hardin. The hometown fans were screaming and yelling, trying to encourage their teams to victory. The battle was back and forth until the last 500 meters. The Lady Cougars sealed the deal over the last 500 meters, when anchor and standout 400 meter runner Bre Baptiste took the baton and ran away with the victory.
“When the season started, the girls began chasing the 31-year-old record, which stood at 4:29.10. They had dropped that time in a few races throughout the season, but in that race, they willed their way to an astonishing time of 4:15.85. It was one of those things you just had to be there to believe it! One of the most incredible races I’ve ever witnessed!” Howard says.
The Lady Cougars had a banner night, as they qualified more girls for state in than the program had inmany years. Junior Lauren Burnett had a stellar and school record-setting night in the discus. She smashed the record of former great, Hayley Mayher (98-07) with a throw of 106’-09”. Burnett placed third but met the automatic qualifying standard on her way to the 9th best throw in the state. She is a first-year thrower. She credits Coach Joe Brockman for getting her to this level and showing her how to be great!

“Taleia, Bre, and Jessica all have one thing in common: they finished 2nd to nationally ranked Kiana Gray of North Hardin in each of their events respectively. North Hardin’s girls are ranked number one in Kentucky,” Howard notes.
The boys had a good night also. Noah Bray led the way by becoming the regional champion in the 400M. Many of the boys just missed qualifying in several events.

“I am so proud of both teams and all of our athletes. The progress has been amazing! We asked them to trust us this year and learn their events. Trust and learn they did!” Howard says. “When we started this season, only five athletes had ever participated in track. Congratulations to our kids. Our school and community can be proud of the dedication and effort these athletes have given all season. Good luck to those competing at state!”
