Despite outscoring their three opponents 36-0 in their first three games on shutout pitching by Zach Yates, Sam Brown, Anthony Woodard and Preston Hurt, the West Kentucky Aces 11-12 team finished second in a tournament at Butler County the last weekend of July.
Logan started the tourney on Friday night with an outstanding pitching/defensive game against Grayson County, winning 14-0 in a run-rule shortened 4-inning game. This game was highlighted by a 1-hit shutout thrown by Zach Yates.
In the second game of the evening, the Aces played Allen County-Scottsville. They got solid pitching from Sam Brown and Anthony Woodard with a great defense behind them to win in a 4-inning, run-rule with the score of 15-0. Woodard also homered in this game.
The Aces went into the single elimination tourney as a #1 seed, getting a bye to the semifinal game where they played against Edmonson County. Yates started on the mound, pitching three innings, and Preston Hurt pitched the final three innings in a 7-0 win to advance to the championship game against hosting Butler County. Woodard got his second homer of the tourney.
In the championship game, Trevor Scott was on the mound, also pitching well. The Aces were up 2-0 after three innings The Aces had not allowed a run in the tourney until Butler scored in the fourth on a couple of errors by the Aces, followed by a couple of hits. After Scott pitched 4 2/3 innings, the Aces got another strong pitching performance when John Carter Myers came on in relief.
The Aces stranded a base runner in the bottom of the sixth to lose 5-4 in the championship game. They outscored their opponents in the four games of the tournament 40-5.
