We have started a new tradition at Russellville Jr./Sr. High School for this school year. Each month we will be spotlighting male and female student athletes for their outstanding play on the field and their success in the classroom. Student athletes are nominated by their coaches for the Gerald Printing Athlete of the Month.
Once they are nominated, each fall sport head coach is asked to vote for one female and male student athlete for RHS and RMS. The athletic department chooses one overall athlete of the month, based on outstanding play, character, leadership, and classroom performance. This format allows for five different students to be recognized on a monthly basis. These awards are being sponsored by Gerald Printing.
Gerald Printing August Athlete of the Month Recipients are listed below.
RMS
Male- Xavier Evans
“Xavier led the 8th grade team to a 3-1 record in the month of August while starting at both running back and linebacker positions. Xavier is also an A/B honor roll student,” says head football coach Pete Ries.
Female-Jaylah Kees.
“Jaylah has played every position in the infield but pitcher. She has been some big defensive plays this year and made some big hits for us. She gives a 110% at every position, she never complains, has a great attitude, and puts in extra work after practice. She’s been to every scheduled and volunteer practice this year,” says head softball coach Ryan Davenport.
RHS
Female-Caitlyn Smith.
“Caitlyn has been a joy to work with and coach this year. She often takes on the leadership role on the squad. She often pulls girls aside to help them learn cheers and skills, and she often sends out reminder texts to the girls. More importantly, Caitlyn's positive attitude and work ethic serves as a model for the rest of the girls. She is truly a gem, and we’re so blessed to have her on the team!” says cheerleader co-coaches Kia Santiago and Heather Rickman.
Male-MJ Jones
“MJ led the RHS Panther football team to a 2-0 record in the month of August. His stat line for these are 15 carries 253 yards rushing and 5 TDs and 10 tackles in two games. MJ is currently leading the Class 1A (statewide) in yards rushing,” says head football coach John Myers.
Overall Athlete of the Month (chosen by the AD)
George Ortiz
George is currently a member of the RHS soccer team and the RHS Football team. George is a team captain for the soccer team. This season he has had to fulfill numerous roles on the team. The team has experienced several injuries and George has been asked to play multiple positions. He has done this with a great attitude! George is also a kicker for the RHS football team. On top of all of his athletic success, he is also a star in the classroom. George has displayed the ultimate example of what a student-athlete truly means.
