The 1990 Russellville High football team will be honored during halftime of the Class 1A state championship game on Friday, Dec. 4, on the campus of Western Kentucky University.
Joe Angolia of Kentucky High School Athletic Association Commissioner Julian Tackett’s office says, “As it does every year, the KHSAA will be honoring the Silver and Golden Anniversary state championship teams at the Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl at Western Kentucky University (Dec. 4-5).”
Joining Coach Ken Barrett’s Panthers in being honored is the Lloyd Memorial team of Erlanger, which won the title 50 years ago in 1965.
Other teams to be honored from 1990 are Fort Knox in Class 2A, Ashland Blazer in 3A and Louisville Trinity in 4A. There was no Class 5A or 6A a quarter of a century ago.
“We would like to extend an invitation to each person from that Russellville team (players, coaches, etc.) to attend this year's state championship, where we will provide two complimentary tickets per person and recognize those participants during the event,” Angolia says.
“If your football team advances to this year’s state championship, we can recognize your past champion during the game your team is playing in at this year’s event.”
Many Russellville fans believe Coach John Meyer’s 2015 team has a great chance of returning to state. The Panthers are currently 6-1 and ranked sixth in the state by the Associated Press.
Those from the team planning to attend should contact RHS Athletic Director Calvin Head before Friday, Nov. 27.
