The 2015-16 basketball season got off to a slow start for the Logan County Lady Cougars. Coach Finley Baird’s team dug too big a hole for themselves in the first half and fell 66-57 at Edmonson County Monday.

The Lady Wildcats built leads of 17-12 and 40-19 at the first two stops. Logan won the second half 38-26 (19-13 each quarter), but that 21-point deficit was too much to overcome.

Senior Rachel Barnett had an excellent game with 17 points and 15 rebounds while fellow senior post player Brooke Barnes added 8 of each. A third senior, Taleia Mason, added 10 points, 5 assists 3 steals and 2 blocked shots.

Ann-Meguiar Bouldin had 4 points, 3 steals and 2 rebounds. Jessica Hines added 7 points and 4 rebounds.

It was a rough night for senior guard Torrie Pollard, who only had 3 points, 2 rebounds and a steal before fouling out.

Also scoring were Logan Williamson, Sarah Beth Hale and Cierra Johnson, who added 4 rebounds, an assist and a steal. Blayke Bingham also played.

The two-time defending district champion Lady Cougars will play next in a district girl-boy doubleheader at Todd Central Friday.

The Russellville Lady Panthers open their season Thursday at Butler County.

Coach Calvin Head wrote on his Facebook page: “It's opening week for high school basketball in Kentucky! As I sit here and prepare for the week, I can't help but feel anxious to see our girls in competition this week. We have made some small gains this preseason with hopes of continued growth throughout the regular season. We like where are at this point and the direction we are headed! We are looking forward to seeing all those Panther fans in the stands this year to cheer on both the Lady Panthers and Panther Basketball teams. This is going to be a very exciting season!
