Down by eight points in the fourth quarter, the Logan County lady Cougars came back to beat Barren County 62-61 Tuesday. Coach Finley Baird’s inbounds play with 2.8 seconds remaining in the game worked to perfection to provide the winning basket.

Brooke Barnes took the inbounds pass from Torrie Pollard and stuck the ball in for the game winner, seven minutes after Coach Piper Lindsey’s Lady Trojans had built a 47-39 lead. It was Pollard’s sixth assist and Barnes’ 18th and 19th points.

When the Lady Cougars found themselves so far behind, Baird went with young quick defenders to change things around. She used Jessica Hines and freshmen Sarah Beth Hale and Abbi Lindsey.

Along the way, Hines and Pollard hit three free throws each, and Rachel Barnett stuffed in a basket.

A key play came when Logan’s Taleia Mason grabbed a loose ball and was fouled by Barren County star Taylor Davis, who had scored 11 of her game-high 32 points in the third quarter. Davis became overly aggressive after the foul and was called for a technical, which ended her night with five fouls with 49 seconds remaining in the contest.

On the ensuing possession, Pollard hit her third 3-pointer of the game.

Barnes got a good pass from Pollard but was fouled. She hit one free throw with 16 seconds.

In those final seconds, Barnett’s rebound shot rolled around the rim and came out, but a Lady Trojan knocked the ball out of bounds. Then came the winning inbounds play.

Lady Cougar Cierra Johnson was popped in the nose during that fourth quarter run and had to leave the game with 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 deflections and a steal.

In support of Davis, Elizabeth Bertram had 19 points for Barren. Bailey Pedigo, Mallory Pedigo and Tiffany Logsdon got the remaining BCHS points.

Pollard finished with 21 points, 6 assists, 3 blocked shots and 3 deflections. Barnes had 19 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Barnett scored 11 and had 8 rebounds; she blocked 3 shots. Mason had 4 steals, 2 assists and 2 deflections. Hines pulled down 7 rebounds and hit 5 of 8 free throws. Logan Williamson scored what proved to be an important bucket.
