When high school soccer season starts in about a month, changes will be plentiful for teams representing schools in the Land of Logan.
The only soccer team which isn’t undergoing a coaching change is the Logan County boys. Coach Eric Evans returns with a veteran squad which hopes to unseat Franklin-Simpson as the perennial district champion.
The Cougars went 13-8’2 last year. Both of their regular season matches finished with 1-goal wins for Franklin, but the Wildcats beat Logan 6-1 in the district championship game.
The Lady Cougars will have a new coach. Dan Duncan, who had been an asset to LCHS in a variety of ways, has taken a job in Bardstown. His team went 10-9-3 last year, capturing their fourth straight district championship. Three seniors on that team—Bre Baptiste, Lauren Burnett and Emma Cartas—all are headed to Campbellsville University where they will play the sport. In three years as the Lady Cougar coach, Duncan led his team to a combined record of 34-21-4.
The new coach is Barry McReynolds, former manager of a local industrial plant, whose daughter Courtney played for Duncan and founding coach Daniel McCarley. McReynolds is now an LCHS teacher.
The Russellville Panthers also have a new coach. He is Jeramy Rust, a former LCHS football player who is also the RHS archery coach. Rust will be taking classes at Southcentral Kentucky Community & Technical College in addition to his coaching duties. RHS soccer, which reactivated for the 2014 season, is 1-24 over the past two seasons.
Meanwhile, Jonathan White, an All-District soccer player for RHS in 2005, has given up coaching the boys to establish the first Lady Panthers soccer team. Russellville has fielded some excellent girls players on the boys team over the years, including Hannah Grise and Hall of Famer Sara Shauberger, but this will be the first all-girls team.
The Lady Panther soccer team will not play a varsity schedule this year.
The following schedules have been submitted to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association by the athletic directors. Only the Lady Cougars’ schedule is complete so far.
