Cheapskate Editor sends Christmas Cards 2013
By Jim Turner

It’s time for my Cheapskate Editor’s Christmas Card List. The format is simple: If I had both the time to write individual Christmas cards and the money to afford the postage, these are the people I would send greetings because of their role in my life and the lives of my family. This is the 18th edition of Cheapskate Editor. The first one appeared in print on Dec. 14, 1996.

The Question: What made 2013 special for the Turners? The Answer: Appreciation grew for our family businesses.

Our son Clay was named one of three Local Food Heroes in the state and was honored at the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville and at LP Field in Nashville during the Kentucky-WKU football game. Turner Valley Produce—which he operates with his mom Elaine and sister Lindsay—was featured on Kentucky public television and in the Daily News. Turner Valley has become an example of a family farm which grows its own fruits and vegetables for sale rather than buying them at auction and pretending they are home grown. Along the same lines, Elaine’s foods made from those fruits and vegetables are becoming more and more popular.

Our younger son Trey also saw his role in the world of cyberspace grow, as he built more websites, sold computer systems for Microsoft, set up computer and electronics systems in four states, and taught computer science for Daymar.

And the online newspaper he publishes, this same Logan Journal you are now reading, grew in popularity with over 2,600 Facebook users asking to be notified every time a new story goes online, which often is multiple times per day.

So, if I were sending out Christmas cards, these are some of the people who would be on the list as related to these family businesses:

To Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner James Comer, Louisville Mayor Greg Fisher, Ben Shaffar of the Ag Department, Stephen Reily & Caroline Heine of Seed Capital KY, and fellow honorees Mike Lewis & Ramsi Kamar for making Clay’s being a Local Produce Hero so memorable

To Robyn Minor of the Daily News of Bowling Green and WKU PBS Producer/Director Cheryl Beckley and producer Brianne Kelleyfor their features on Clay and Turner Valley Produce

To Mary Lucy Franklin, the first one we know who voted for Clay for this honor, and to the hundreds of other people who voted for him as Local Produce Hero

To the vendors on the west side of the Logan County Farmers’ Market for their friendship and for being honest about what they produce. They include Mike and Barbara Dorris, Phillip and Becky Johnson, Wanda and Dan Grayson, Roger ‘Goober’ Duncan & Ted and Darla Baldwin

To Virgil & Jo Parrish, Bobby and Joyce Wilson, Jr. Thomason, Jerry Van Zee, and John Amzi Zimmerman for the good role models and advice they give our family about  ag business

To Bowling Green ag business icons Bill Jackson of Jackson’s Orchard and Debra Chaney of Chaney’s Dairy for working with us and including us in their promotions

To Joe Gran Clark and other leaders of Historic Russellville for encouraging the Kentucky Wonders Garden Market and providing the site for it

To Amanda Brawner, who hooked Elaine up with a craft shop in Central Kentucky that will market her creations year round and became an even closer friend for Clay

To Elaine Dixon, who always does a good job of managing the Logan County Arts & Crafts Club’s Christmas in November two-day show and sale

To Barry Dill for his leadership at Daymar College and for his hiring Trey as a college teacher

To Bryson Price of Price Funeral Home, Greg Hale of Logan Telephone Cooperative, Roy Morgan of Roy’s Bar-B-Q, Jerry White & Donnie Riley of Riley-White, and JoAnn DeArmond of the Carpenter Fitness &Aquatics Centerfor their long-time support of The LoJo as advertisers

To Chris McGinnis, Don Neagle and Sharon Ray of WRUS for how willing they are to work with The LoJo and for becoming one of our advertisers

To Cathy Carver, who lives out West and still maintains an active presence in Logan County. We sent out hundreds of emails in November offering readers a chance to express thanks to anyone of their choice during the Thanksgiving season and also to support The LoJo as we try to provide free news and interesting reading in the Land of Logan. Cathy was the only one who responded.

To Algie Ray Smith for his friendship to our entire family in so many ways, including writing many Guest Articles for The LoJo.

To Mark Abbott, who has allowed us to use hundreds of his sports pictures without expecting anything in return. He’s a wonderful photographer. Now if we can just find a way to keep his daughter Maddie, a talented senior softball and volleyball player at LCHS, active a few more years to keep Mark involved.

To Greg Cosgrove for his sports photography and his lady friend Tammy Wiseman for getting him involved with The LoJo

To Steve Everett for his encouragement and his photographic skills

To people who have written interesting Guest Articles for The LoJo, including Nelson Weaver, Al Smith, Al Cross, Paula & Ray Clark, Marie Foley, Patty Smith, Margie Milliken Vanoy, Regina Brooks, Tommy Hines, James Milam, Ruth Slaughter, Donna Brown Wilkerson, Rhonda Barton, Michael Morrow, Fadocia Annette Nole Hall, Patti Neal Haeberlin, John Paul Brady, Merry Lee Brewer, Sherrie Corum Pryor and Brenda Sisk Senseney

To Russellville Schools leaders Kim McDaniel, Nathan Thompson, Mary Celsor & Leon Smith, who are great about getting the word to me about what’s going on so I can spread the news on The LoJo

To Richard Holloman, Dan Duncan, Tracey Naylor, Adam Decker, Mark Reynolds, James & Rob Imlay, Jennifer Ferguson, Greg Howard, Julie Belcher, Tammy Smith Grayson, Eric Procter, Artis & Renee Stratton, Jennifer Clark and Hugh McReynolds, people who get sports news to us faithfully

To those who spread the word about what is happening in their place of employment, especially Diane Crawley of Adult Education, Paula Timberlake of LEAD, April Pauley of Auburn Senior Center, Ted Sloan of the state Ag Department, Linda Harlan of Kentucky Artisans at the Saddle Factory, Chris Pack of Congressman Ed Whitfield’s office, Logan County High School Principal Casey Jaynes,  Sheila Wilson of Logan County Superintendent Marshall Kemp’s office, Lisa White of CharacterWorks, Molly Burchett of Kentucky Health News, Kathy Thweatt of the district health department, Hank Fuerst of the Bowling Green Hot Rods, and Michael Schroeder, Kyles Neaves & Robert Sampson of WKU Athletics

Friends and Neighbors

To Bonnie Hooper, Elaine’s step-mom, who is recovering well from having a major blockage removed in her neck last week

To good neighbors, including Sue and Dewey Wood, Kenny & Linda Chapman, David & Carolyn Price, Shorty & Cheryl Taylor, Jesse & Roberta Blythe, and Rusty & Raye Ann Clark.

To Jeannie Bowles, a lifelong friend and former co-worker who gets to enjoy the retirement she earned at the Farm Service Agency

To the Morgan family of Roy’s Bar-B-Q. Not long after the cancer-caused deaths of partner/brother Roger Morgan and of partner/mom Jolene Morgan, the Roy Morgans have been struck twice this year. Son Ryan had a mass removed from his brain area and now wife/mom Michelle is not only battling cancer but has been hospitalized Christmas week with infected third degree burns caused by radiation treatments. Life has not been fair to the Morgans lately, and we wish them a much better and healthier 2014.

To the family of one of my lifetime friends, Lon Sosh, who gave me my first job in journalism joining him and the late Pat O’Brien in sports broadcasts on WRUS. Cards would go to Dartha and Christie Sosh; Londa, Fritz and Ryan Nau; Ann and Rick Leigh; Jean, Mark, Ann Michelle, John Brett & Kasey Reynolds.

To Bobby & Christine Allen, Carol Thacker, Chelsea Jepson, Betty Anderson, Charley Jo Allen, Ginny Mayton Harding & Gerry Mayton Smith, my cousins with whom I’ve interacted frequently this year

To Scott & Lori MacAllister and their children, who were good friends and fun to be around while they were Logan Countians

To Jim & Ruth Dauley, good friends, good people, good vegetable customers

To Christy Spencer, one of my few college students who has stayed in touch since her grades were recorded. Christy lost the grandmother who had raised her this fall and I felt her grief.

To Chandlers teacher Belle Rush, who lost both her mother and her aunt within a few days of each other between Thanksgiving and Christmas

To Chris Tighe, Clay’s friend in the bulk newspaper distribution field

To Ethan Meguiar, Greg Howard and Steven Lyne, head coaches who demonstrate regularly that it is possible to field winning teams on a regional basis at Logan County High School

To Russellville football coach John Myers, who assembled what I firmly believe was the second best team in Class A football in Kentucky this year

To Greg Owens, Richard Holloman and Don Firchow, men who no longer have children in school but continue to support their schools’ athletes and athletic programs fervently

To Dorris Vick, who works tirelessly to help others and to nurture young people into educated, productive adults through Concerned Citizens of Russellville/Logan County. She’s an under-appreciated asset to the community.

To Waseem Moorad, who brought the Bowling Green Hornets to Russellville as a home base

To Otis Key and Montez Mason¸ former standout high school basketball players who are now assistant high school coaches at South Warren and Warren East, respectively

To Barry Bilyeu, a loyal friend that Trey can always depend on

To David Atkins & William Washington, former co-workers of mine at LCHS who really like to find their names on this list

To Deeann Hallman Vick and Steve Eans, the longest tenured members of the LCHS staff and faculty, who both retired this year. Also to Deeann in the death of her dad, Dan Hallman

To Nancy Wright, who organizes quarterly gatherings of “Grateful Geezers,” some of us who were among the faculty during the first few years of Logan County High School. Enjoying a happy holiday meal recently were Principal Howard Gorrell, Coach Barry Reed, Judy Williamson, Sue Wood, Jane Harper, Becky Christmas, Norma Taylor, Jane Collier, Doug & Karen Milliken, Nancy and yours truly.

Obvious in his absence was a fixture in the first dozen years or so of LCHS, Athletic Director/Assistant Principal/then Principal Bob Birdwhistell, who has hospitalized in Nashville but is being transferred to Creekwood Place for rehab following major back surgery and complications from it. It’s been a tough year for Bird and his wife Donna, who has had health problems for many years. Complicating matters is that their daughter, Jane Wells, had surgery a few days earlier. Daughter Susan Ezell and son Joe Birdwhistell have had more responsibilities as a result. So cards would go to Bob, Donna, Joe, Leslie & Kevin Birdwhistell along with Susan and Mike Ezell and Jane, Billy & Taylor Wells.

To Tommy Lennon, my best friend in 4-H and also president of our senior class, who is organizing our 50th reunion next year long distance from Missouri.

To Bobby Sue Clark Silvey, one of our classmates, who is in her Christmas since we were teens without her late husband, Gary Silvey, one of the greatest Panther linemen ever but yet a gentle man

To the family of our classmate Frankie Brown, which would include Brian, Valerie, David, Marty, William & Thomas Brown, Barbara & Danny Williams, and Debbie Campbell

To classmate Dale Tinsley in the recent death of his wife, Janet Carol Tinsley. Our family knows their daughter, Amy Slaughter, and her family well.

To the family of Hayden Hayes, the dad of our classmate Doris Glenn ‘Gabby’ Hayes. Cards would go to both Gabbys, Doris & Keith, along with Sandy, Shane and Jason Hayes, Freida and John Blanton, and Brenda Childress

To the family of the man who had been our neighbor longest, Glendon ‘Buck’ Johnson: Eunice, Wayne & Jean, Gary & Glenna, Caleb & Sarah Johnson, Lindsey and Joe Thomas, Christy Johnson Cherry & Kelly Burgess

To Barry & Jane Silvey, Becky Young & Jenny Harper in the death of mother/grandmother Juanita Silvey, long-time Dunmor correspondent for the print newspaper

To Hazel Fleming, Dick Dickerson & Louise Henderson, who were also faithful columnists in my newspaper editing days

To Trey’s friend and officiating mentor Jerry Kimmel, who was inducted into the National Federation of High School Associations Hall of Fame this year.

To the family of Tony Boisseau, who was Trey’s last baseball coach when the Bees finished third in the state in Senior Babe Ruth Baseball. The cards would go to Mary Gladys, Rhonda, Kyle & Brittany, Nicky & Glenda, John Paul & Missy, Steve, and Paul & Cary Boisseau.

To three of Trey’s former teammates, Chad Taylor and Keenan & Sean Brown, in the deaths of their grandfathers, Joe Carr and Marion Lee. Also getting cards would be family members Lori and Mike Brown, Dana and Clint Ashby, Tina and Brad Campbell, Gary Lee, Megan Lee Coleman, Heather Lee-Chestnut, Erin Lee McGuire, Devin Powell, Brandon Ashby, Leah Ashby Gandy, Becky Richardson Carr, David and Pat Taylor, Claudia and Tom Lennon, Paige Taylor and Evelyn Richardson

To former WRUS air personality Janelle ‘J.B.’ McGehee and retired conservation officer Jeff Finn in the deaths of their mom, Eva Ruth Finn,  and their sister, Janine Hicks, within a short time of each other.

To Todd Adler, who flew to Washington with his wife Dedra to donate bone marrow to a recipient he had never met

To our lunch group in the WKU Communication Department, which includes Dr. Carl Kell, Dr. Dale Wicklander, Dr. Larry Caillouet, Dr. Angie Jerome, Gary Hughes, Cyndia Tarrence & Laura Wagoner.

To those who make my work with Southcentral Kentucky Community & Technical College (BG Tech was much easier to say) pleasant, Dr. James McCaslin, Donna Hayden, Alice Benham, Kristie Lee, Jessica Bayer, Leah Wendt & Chris Schulstrom.

To Andy & Zack Woodall, the father and son sports broadcasting team on WRUS who were at the microphones describing a most painful football season at LCHS. I learned long ago that people think you are a better sportswriter/sportscaster when your team is winning, but the Woodalls managed to stay positive during nine running clocks. They never gave the impression they didn’t want to be there, even though there are much easier ways to make a living or be involved in sports.

To teacher Jane Birdwhistell Wells and principal Randy Marcum for their leadership in organizing and presenting the charter class of Lewisburg Leadership Hall of Fame. The most impressive facet of the entire program was that it was conducted by the students, not the adults.

To our friend and my former colleague, Kathy Wilcutt Hathcock, who remains strong despite the prolonged illness of her husband, Mark ‘Trapper’ Hathcock, and all three of her grown children no longer living nearby. She understands the role of a community newspaper as much as anyone I know.

To friends Chuck Rogers & Lee Blythe, who are forever joined by Chuck’s donating a kidney to Lee

To Clay & Debbie Bilyeu for all the time, energy and entertainment they devote to countless worthwhile causes in Logan County

To Toby Baptiste and the other coaches and leaders of Impact Ministries, which won a state championship while youngsters were not only learning football fundamentals but also about being good people

To coaches John Calipari & Rick Pitino, who have returned the Bluegrass State to its rightful place in men’s college basketball with back-to-back national championships

To Louisville Athletic Director Tom Jurich for building the best overall athletic program in America with a men’s national basketball championship, a women’s berth in the national baskeball finals, an Orange Bowl BCS win over number 3 Florida and an 11-1 football season this fall, a win over number 2 Vanderbilt to reach the College World Series, and 11 sports teams in the top 25.

Government Circles

To Judge Sue Carol Browning & Jailer Bill Jenkins, both of whom have decided not to seek reelection after many years of services to the citizens of Logan County

To mayors Donna Blake of Adairville, Mike Hughes of Auburn, Tina Callahan-Dye of Lewisburg and Mark Stratton of Russellville for their dedication to their cities and cooperation between them and thjeir councils in relative peace and harmony

To the board of Russellville Electric Plant Board for the foresight to install one of the most advanced internet services in Kentucky and for hiring the impressive Robert White to succeed long-time EPB Superintendent Larry Wilcutt

To the family of the late magistrate Harold Prince, one of my personal favorites. He was one of the most honest politicians I ever knew, since he would ask, “How many votes live on that road?” His family suffered a double blow, since less than a month later his son-in-law, Ronald Kelley, died unexpectedly.  Cards would go to Cecil, Steve and Cynthia Prince; Brenda, Brooke, Brandon, Leroy, Dale & Tina Kelley; Amber Shirley, Tiffany, Jacob Prince and Josh Prince

To the family of long-time Russellville Mayor Ken Smith, the subject of previous tributes on The LoJo, including Jonnie, Randy, Al, Jon Ray, Samra, Algie Ray & Patty Smith, Frances Keyes and Ann Coffman

To the family of former Logan County Jailer Ray Max Sanders: Glenda, Clyde Nolan, Maxine & Nolan Sanders and Janie Gregory

To the family of former Russellville councilman Bill Greer: Rawlie and Donna Greer, Cheryl Rogers, Esther Bishop, Amy Varble & Mallory Rogers

To the children of former Auburn Councilwoman Jessie Duer: Olivia Nelson, Jamie Arney, James Duer

To the family of former Lewisburg Principal and First Gentleman Bill McKinney (his wife Gwyneth was mayor), including daughters Beth McKinney & Melissa McKinney.

To the family of former Logan County Hospital Administrator Elizabeth Wilson: Jane and Mark Harper, Beth and Steve Stratton, Annie Kay & Jamie Wilson, Steven & Candi Stratton, Amy Stratton

To the family of former Russellville School Board member Bob Guion, who served in countless roles of public service. Getting cards would beJoyce, Andy & Pam Guion, Carol & Dick Switzer, Janice & Mike Threlkeld, Julie & Bob Steele, Nancy & David Guion, and Katherine Johnstone. Judge Edward  Johnstone was also a survivor, but he has died since then.

To the family of Virginia Shifflett, whose late husband Fount Sr. was a long-time political activist. Recipients would include Fount Jr. & Ann Duncan, Johnny, Chief Victor & Tracey Shifflett,  and Mary & Taylor Chasteen

To the family of Katie Stratton, whose son Mark is mayor of Russellville and another son, Michael,  was police chief. In addition to Michael and Mark, cards would have gone to Bobby, Johnny, Danny, Marvin and Connie Stratton, Marie Fuller and Ruthel Hardin.

Lasley Johnson, the founder of Ranger Auto Parts, was involved in so many phases of life in Lewisburg/North Logan that he surely was a councilman at some point. I’d send cards toSheila & Jeff Barrow, Chris & Alicia, Mitchell & Heather, Will, Meredith, Cade & Jenny Brooke Johnson; Janet Wright and Courtney Jackson.

To the first family of Red River in the death of matriarch Ann Moore: Richard, Darlynn & Rich Moore, Jessica Hall; Charlotte and Billy Perdue

The Hintons have long been one of the leading families in North Logan. Two members of Brent  and Edith Hinton clan’s, daughter Bobbie Dale Hinton Taylor and daughter-in-law Maxine Hinton, died within a few weeks of each other. They were well known as were their late husbands, Bobby Taylor and Clacy Hinton. Cards would go to, among others, George, Jimmy & Debbie Taylor, Deloris Coursey, Cindy Suiter & Sherri White.

Church Matters

To the extended Maxwell family in the death of patriarch J.W. Maxwell and in the return of treatments for Trac Taylor, husband of J.W. and Nadine’s granddaughter, Amy Maxwell Taylor. Trac is amazing in how he handles adversity. He rarely missed services while taking treatments, he kept his sense of humor throughout, and now he’s back at work at Logan Aluminum. I would send cards to them along with Michael, Linda, Marvin & Sue Maxwell.

To Marlin & Phyllis Coe, who quadrupled their flock of grandchildren this year. Trevor & Elizabeth Coe, Landon & Emily Coe, and Mark & Kendra Cole all became parents for the first time. The senior citizen of the grandkids is little Mason Smith, the son of Kurt & Kaitlin Smith.

To the Baker/Justice family, who have had more than their share to deal with this year. Charlie & Patricia Baker are two of the hardest-working and most friendly members of Crittenden Drive Church of Christ. Patricia’s mother, Louvella Law, died recently, as had been expected. Their daughter, Mary Lou Justice, underwent a long-awaited kidney transplant a couple of weeks ago. Last week, her body rejected that damaged kidney, so she is back on dialysis and has some incisions to recover from before she would be able to get another kidney when one becomes available. Mary Lou’s husband, my former newspaper colleague Steve Justice, needs surgery but had other health problems that delayed it, and he’s unable to work. Their daughter Katie also has serious health problems, and Patricia’s brother-in-law, Roy Sattazahn, is seriously ill.

To Pearl O’Dell, a resident of Creekwood Place, who is very dear to our family

To sisters Julie Davenport & Annelle White, who again led a very successful outreach program on Thanksgiving Eve. Crittenden Drive distributed over 1,100 meals that Wednesday throughout Russellville and Logan County.

To Brian White, who was virtually apart of our extended family as a teen and has grown into such a fine Christian man and leader that he was named an elder of the church this year. I believe he is the youngest elder in Crittenden Drive history.

To Barclay Riley, who has been unable to attend worship services for almost two months because of his health. He was the Crittenden Drive minister when I was a teen and played a huge role in my life. His wife Marilyn has always been the perfect companion for such a Godly man.

To Mark Dantonio, coach of the Michigan State football team. If his Spartans had not beaten Ohio State and the Buckeyes had reached the national championship game, the Crittenden Drive congregation would have been subjected to endless Buckeye braggadocia by our minister, Ohioan Dale Parsley, product of a misguided youth filled with Ohio State propaganda.

To Kathryn Edwards on the death of her husband over 60 years, Lory Edwards, and her daughter and son-in-law, Joe and Shirley Grace

To Paul Hines on the death of his wife, Vinie Hines, and to her son and his wife, Darrell & Trisha Dodson, and her daughter, Joanie Dodson. Death also took a former member of the congregation, Paul’s brother-in-law and baseball historian, Frank Hines, and I would also send a card to Frank’s widow, Dorothy Hines and to their sister-in-law, Barbara Nell Hines.

To the family of Patsy Addison, long-time church secretary who died this year. Her husband Vernon has also not been well and our present secretary, their daughter-in-law Linda has devoted much time and energy in caring for them.

To those whose lives Sue Coffman touched in her almost century on earth, which would be just about everybody at Crittenden Drive, but especially David Atkins and Charlie & Pat Roney.

To the family of another former member of our congregation, Ronnie Potter: Helen, Laura and Louise Potter; Heather and Todd Anderson; Ann Mosier

To Jimmy Cole, who grew up at Crittenden Drive, the son of Martha Sue Jackson Cole and the late Charles Cole. He now works with New Pathways for Children, a residence for youngsters who have experienced problems in the past. Crittenden Drive is helping support the project, and the Graves County Schools—headed by Superintendent R.B. Mays, a former Logan Countian—work closely with New Pathways.

To Punkin Klein¸who keeps going strong and hardly ever misses a service, even though it’s been a while since we celebrated her 90th birthday

To some church members who have been having health  problems, including Nita Williams (and her son-in-law Jimmy Chestnut), Geneva Bilbrey, Wayne Powell, Blanche Vick, Margie Clark, Chastity Holloway, Johnnie Walling, Geraldine Hodges, Weldy Hunt, Millard Lewis & B.J. Kempf

More Deaths

The year began with a tragedy. Barbara Christian and her grandson Eli Jessup lost their lives in an automobile accident in mid-January. Natalie’s great-aunt, Margie Woodall, died the same day. Cards would go to Anthony, Hunter and Natalie Jessup, Michael Christian, Marion Woodall, Georgia Bell Jessup, Glenn Jessup, Teresa Jessup, Sandra Hibbs, Sonny Hibbs, Elvera Neely, Kay Kisselbaugh, Marie Epley & Rita Cropper.

Cards would also go to family members of the following whose earthly lives ended this year:
