A handicapper picking the odds on a favorite for next week’s Tobacco Show that’s always part of the Logan County Tobacco & Heritage Festival might want to look to South Logan.
Not only did Alex Hughes, who is now a junior at Logan County High School, win both the Youth and Open divisions of the show last year, but also the dark air cured tobacco he grew and entered recently placed second in FFA competition at the Kentucky State Fair.
Hughes farms with his dad, Richard Hughes, in the Adairville area on a fourth-generation family farm. He raised 10 acres of tobacco this year,
Alex is a member of the LCHS FFA Chapter. He has taken classes the past two years under Jay Campbell, whom his mom Valerie calls “his mentor.” Bryan Estes is the lead advisor for LCHS FFA.
Tobacco Judging will take place near the Logan County Chamber of Commerce office on Carrico Park Square from 7-10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 10. This will be new County Agriculture Agent LeeAnn Martin’s first Tobacco Show as agent.
