Shaker Village 2015 Calendar of Events announced

The South Union Shaker Village Calendar of Events has been announced by Operations Manager Kaelin Vernon. Until March 1, the Shaker Village will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
 
L&N Railroad Luncheon
Saturday, March 7
Enjoy a hearty 1880s menu typical of what would have been served at South Union’s famous railroad hotel, the Shaker Tavern. The historic menu includes roast turkey and cranberries, baked macaroni and cheese,
sweet potatoes, homemade applesauce, breaded tomatoes, and walnut cake with bourbon whipped cream.
Reservations required: $22 members, $25 non-members / Time 12:00 noon

South Union Seminar
Friday and Saturday, April 17-18
This year’s event focuses of architecture at South Union and how buildings were used. South Union’s unique Civil War experience will be explored through the diary of Eldress Nancy E. Moore, written while
she lived in the village Ministry Shop. South Union’s use of color on interior paint surfaces will also be examined; the reconstruction of a Centre Family dining room corner cupboard will be revealed in its early 19th century brilliance. More information to come!

SUSV Lecture Series:
“new discoveries in south union architecture research”
Saturday, May 9
A behind the scenes to tour of some of the “off limits” spaces at South Union will highlight a presentation about the community’s innovative building design and unique use of color, led by Executive Director Tommy Hines. Box lunch will be served.
Reservations required: $25.00 members, $30.00 non-members, $15.00 students

“Shake, ride & roll” bike event
Saturday, June 6
In cooperation with the Bowling Green League of Bicyclists (BGLOB), the South Union Shaker Village will host a bike ride through the beautiful countryside, much of what was originally the Shaker’s 6,000 acre
farm. Special premiums and options for the day’s event will be offered upon registration. To register contact: www.meetup.com
 
Music on the Farm
Saturday, September 12
Imagine how nice it will be to feel the cool fall breezes wafting through the 1875 Grain Barn, listening to live music while strolling across the Shaker farm, and enjoying afternoon dessert! Kick back in a relaxed
family atmosphere and partake in some traditional Southern delicacies, including fried peach pies, apple cider slushes, and homemade Shaker Sweet Potato Pie ice cream from Chaney’s Dairy Barn.
Tickets: $15 per person, $25 per couple, $5 children ages 6-12 / Time: 2:00pm – 5:00pm

Shaker Farm Day
Saturday, October 10
The common farm chores of yesterday are practically lost arts today, but not at the South Union ShakerVillage! Enjoy a day of interactive demonstrations where butter is made, corn is shelled, hams are smoked,
laundry is boiled, apples are pressed into cider and much more. Lunch, catered by the Brickyard, will be available.
Tickets: $10 per person, $5 children ages 6-12 / Time: 10:00am – 4:00pm

A Shaker Breakfast
Saturday, November 7
A Civil War-era Shaker breakfast that promises to please and to astonish . . . featuring fried chicken, scrambled eggs, sweet potatoes, pork sausage, asparagus, apple pie, buttermilk biscuits and more! Served at South Union’s famous railroad hotel, the Shaker Tavern.
Reservations required: $22 members, $25 non-members / Time: Seatings at 8:30am and 10:30am

“Christmas at Shakertown” Holiday Market
Saturday, December 5
One of Kentucky’s finest antique and craft markets, just in time for Christmas! Features over 30 regional antique vendors and artists, all nestled in the historic atmosphere of the South Union Shaker Village.
Admission: A canned food item or donation that will be distributed to those needful
Time: 9:00am – 4:00pm
For a “first chance” opportunity to shop, make reservations for the “Christmas at Shakertown” Preview Party, Friday evening, December 4. Enjoy coffee, cider and desserts in the most festive of holiday
atmospheres. Reservations required: $10 per person / Time: 6:00pm

Broom-making demonstrations will be available on the first Saturday of each month, March - October.

The South Union Shaker Village offers school tours year ‘round, but presents the following focused tours:

“Scientific Americans: Shaker Invention and Technology” – May 1-30

“To Grandmother’s House We Go: Thanksgiving in 1914” – November 3-21
