At each month’s meeting of the Logan County Board of Education, each school presents a list of “Good News” items. Also Superintendent Kevin Hub issues a report. This is the February report:
District:
Ben Kemplin has been selected as the new Director of Human Resources and Operations. He will begin in his new position on July 1, 2015.
Three students selected to advance to the Junior Beta Club State competition presented crafts at the February board meeting. Austin Gouy presented a chest, diligently constructed under the guidance of his grandfather; Colten Blick presented a sketch on wood; and Zoe Hoots presented her wreath adhering to the theme of the convention. Louis Scott and Christian Hines, members of the Robotics and Engineering Club, discussed the mechanical, programming and application aspects involved in building their robot. The students demonstrated the robot’s abilities and will compete in the local competition in late February.
Adairville:
At District Governor’s Cup, the Middle School Academic Team earned 1st place overall for District 17. The Future Problem Solving Team (Olivia Bouldin, Caroline Davenport, Keyleigh Harlan, Elijah Hopkins, & Anna Shoulders) received 1st place. The Quick Recall Team received 2nd place. Bailey Howell earned 2nd place, and Jenna Robertson and Austin Epley tied for 5th place on the Arts & Humanities assessment. Olivia Bouldin earned 1st place, and Keyleigh Harlan received 3rd place in Composition. John Hendricks earned 2nd place, and Rylee Hobbs received 5th place on the Language Arts assessment. John Hendricks received 2nd place on the Mathematics assessment. Anna Shoulders earned 3rd place on the science assessment. The team also received the Hume Sportsmanship Award.
Winners from District Governor’s Cup competed at Regional Governor’s Cup held at Glasgow Middle School. At Regional Competition, our Future Problem Solving Team earned 3rd place, Olivia Bouldin received 3rd place in Composition, Keyleigh Harlan earned 4th place in Composition, and the entire team earned 6th place overall. Congratulations, Academic Team Members!
The following 24 students earned “100 Days of Perfect Attendance Awards” for being present on the first 100 days of school: Rylie Fulcher, Lydia Lyon, Alex Elmore, Shane Lyon, Emma Robertson, Chandler Snorton, Micah Delrosal, Ali Garrett, Briana Shelton, Tramane Snorton, Lawrence Baker, Zakary Delrosal, Autumn Elmore, Joshua Henderson, Nathan Neal, Devon Carter, Kristina Knight, Jose Wilkerson, Kayleigh Williams, Lindsay Allen, Austin Epley, Brittany Garrett, Bailey McCaleb, and Jamar Morrow. The following staff also earned “100 Days for Perfect Attendance” awards: Carol Ann Dossett, Vicky Finch, Justin Kirby, Tammy Lyne, & Emily Williams. Way to go for making every day count!
Auburn:
Auburn Cheerleaders won first in Division and first Overall at the Logan County Cheerleading Competition on Saturday, Jan. 24.
Auburn Lady Tigers and Tiger Basketball Teams both were runners-up in the Logan County Middle School Tournament.
Auburn conducted the annual Spelling Bee. Preston Hurt won first place; Colton Blick, second; and Suzanna Franklin, third. All three students will compete in the Logan County Spelling Bee on February 17th.
Tanner Morrow won second place in Social Studies, and Louis Scott won second place in Science at the Governor's Cup Competition in Glasgow on Wednesday, Jan. 28. Both students will compete at the state level in Louisville on Sunday, March 15.
Chandlers:
Chandlers School community members submitted enough votes for the school to be showcased by WBKO as a winner of “Poppy’s Field Trip.”

Lewisburg:
Lewisburg School hosted the Governor’s Cup Academic Competition this year. Lewisburg’s Academic Team placed 1st in quick recall and placed 2nd overall in the district. They advanced to Regionals, held on January 31st in Glasgow.
Olmstead:
Rachel Taylor competed at Regional Governor's Cup on Jan. 13. She placed 4th in Language Arts and 5th in Arts & Humanities and qualified for the State Finals held in Louisville.
All three archery teams - 2nd/3rd Grade Team, Elementary Team, Middle School Team - placed third in competition at Muhlenberg County High School on January 13th. Many individual medals were won, including Brett Knifley, who was the top overall shooter in the Elementary Division.
The Lady Rams and Rams BasketballTeams won the Logan County Middle School Tournament. The victories were the 5th consecutive win for the Lady Rams and the third for the Rams.
The Olmstead Rams Cheer Squad placed 1st in the Logan County Cheer Competition Small Division Category and 2nd Overall.
Second semester applications and acceptance letters for School-Wide Leaderstook place in January. Students in grades 3rd-8th will lead in multiple roles (Office Leaders, Library Leaders, etc.) throughout the remainder of the school year.
LCAS:
One student will be returning to home school with improved scores in all four core subjects. One student completed a class gaining an additional credit which restored him to his original 2017 graduating class.
LCHS:
The Academic Quick Recall Team won second in the district and advanced to the Regionals. The following individuals won medals in their individual subjects and also advance to the Regionals:
Isiaha Price – 5th in social science, 4th in science
Paige Jones – 5th in arts & humanities
Paul Addison – 4th in math
Easton May – 4th in arts & humanities
Caleb Cline – 3rd in social science and 3rd in math
Nathan Franklin – 3rd in language arts
Daniel Franklin – 2nd in science
Austin Yewell – 3rd in science and 1st in arts & humanities in the entire district
LCHS senior Kaleb Coursey signed to play college football with Lindsey Wilson College on Tuesday, February 10..
LCHS junior Rachel Barnett has won Total Fitness Connection’s Athlete of the Week.
Congratulations to freshman Tori Scarbrough, sophomore Matthew Garner, junior Brittany Carter and senior Caitlyn Barry! They were the Attendance for Academic Success Contest Winners for December, 2014 and January, 2015. Each student received a $15.00 Taco Bell gift card and Academic Success medallions.
RATC:
There are 30 FBLA members preparing to compete in the Regional Leadership Conference at KY Wesleyan College and 32 SkillsUSA members preparing to compete in the regional competition held at SKYCTC. Good luck to all competitors.
SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
We had another great GYO session focused on school improvement planning. We also explained the “GYO Job Shadowing” process to the more than 50 in attendance. Nineteen teachers have been chosen to participate this semester. We will open the application for this program again next fall.
The January session of Leadership Logan focused on Local Government. As we moved throughout the various Logan County governmental groups, it was great to hear how supportive each of them were for our students, staff and our proposed construction of a new Area Technology Center.
Several principals, teachers and district leaders spent nearly two hours with State Senator Whitney Westerfield discussing our concerns on proposed legislation. Sen. Westerfield was also able to provide us some insight on his expectations for this year’s “short session.”
The Superintendent Teen Task Force met at LCHS, where student leaders gave them a personal tour of the school. The task force students also heard from Principal Casey Jaynes, JROTC instructor Joseph Brockman and football coach Steve Duncan. Each of these men gave an inspiring message to a group who are only a few short months from being freshmen.
Late in January, I had my first opportunity to experience the Logan County Middle School Basketball Tournament. It was definitely an experience. It was great to see the student and community support for both teams from each of the middle schools. Certainly, a special congratulations goes to the boys’ and girls’ teams from Olmstead for winning their respective championships, but the players, coaches and fans from each of the schools should be proud of their season.
