Leaders from the Logan Economic Alliance for Development (LEAD) and the Logan County Chamber of Commerce have begun developing a framework of a week-long opportunity for teachers and business leaders to interact and discuss ways to expand and improve the math and science instruction in Logan County Schools. During the week of July 13-17,  fifteen educators representing each of the Logan County schools took part in the Logan County Math & Science Institute.

Each day, the teachers took a plant tour, and discussed connections between the local business and classroom instruction. The objectives of the Math & Science Institute were:

*Showcase math & science opportunities to teachers in each of the Logan County Schools.

*Add relevance to current math and science units through exposure to Logan County businesses and industries.

Increase vertical and horizontal curriculum alignment by providing an environment conducive for collaboration, planning, enhancement and development of instructional activities.

The collaboration between local businesses and classroom educators were mutually beneficial. Business leaders commented on how refreshing it was to give tours to people so interested, and with so many questions. Teachers were amazed with the quality and variety of opportunities available to them and their students. Several teacher comments included those listed below:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed visiting local businesses and getting to see a variety of services they offer to our community.”

“This was an amazing training! I truly enjoyed learning more about our community businesses! There were so many topics and information received that I plan to use in class to help students make connections.”

“The labs and all the technology used was an eye opener to me. I also was amazed at the “family” businesses that have grown and become staples of our community.”

“I found it a wonderful experience and chance to meet members of the community and businesses. I think we made good contacts within the community and within our teacher groups.”

“The chance to develop a relationship with these businesses is invaluable! This week has provided a source of connections that will help impact student learning.”

Each teacher was paid a $500 stipend for the week and received a $1,000 technology voucher good toward the purchase of instructional materials and equipment for their classrooms. Logan County Schools hopes to provide the Math & Science Institute next summer with participation from new educators and industries.
