From the Little Free Library at the front of the school, to special guest speakers with Wonder Club, the Auburn Library is full of activities, programs, and the excitement of reading! Students in every level of the school benefit from the knowledge - and the fun - to be gained within the doors of the library.
Monthly Friday Flicks at the Auburn School Library are becoming a literary hit! Each month students in 5th-8th grade may choose to read the book that goes with the featured film. After passing an AR quiz on the book they are invited to attend a showing of the movie with their lunch and light refreshments.
During October, nine students attended Indian in the Cupboard. "I'm going to watch it again and again!" said attendee Kaleb Hardison. Others at this month's book movie included Andrew Dupree, Rileigh Gossett, Selynna Metcalfe, Mariah Perdue, Caleb Poe, Braydon and Caydon Seabolt, and Nicole Silvy. The first film of the year, Shiloh, was attended by 21 students, and the third, Ella Enchanted, was attended by eight girls in November.
Other novels and deadlines are: Series of Unfortunate Events (Read one book in the series) by Dec. 11 (23 students are already signed up!), Holes by Jan. 29, Tuck Everlasting by Feb. 26, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by March 25, and Stuart Little by April 29. Hope to see you at the movies!
Students reading scary chapter books find themselves in the Cool Ghoul Graveyard at Auburn School! Fourth through eighth graders or (fourth and fifth graders) at Auburn may read scary chapter books to earn bats, claws, ghosts, and spiders labeled with their name, to place in the "graveyard" outside the library door.
Upon successfully reading four chapter books, students may draw a sucker from the Ghost Tree. Sucker sticks with a colored tip win an extra prize! So far Aidan Alms, Jimmy Anderson, Avery Beason, Alexis Carnal, Claire Dayton, Promisse Helms, and Aidan Hughes have read four books each and pulled suckers to win Halloween jars, water bottles, and banks full of candy, books, and more! Forty-nine eerie chapter books have been read in less than three weeks! Other names currently filling the graveyard are Angel Bellar, Bradon Bond, Sydni Blick, Hailey Burgess, Robert Camp, Evan Campbell, Addy Carter, Danny Dotson, Addison Hughes, Kellie Hunt, Joselyn Luther, Madison McCall, Emerson McKinnis, Preston Thompson, Keenan Uhles, and Hayden Whittinghill. Congratulations to all these spook-tacular readers!
Students may voluntarily participate in taking Accelerated Reader quizzes for the books they read.
Special trips with Principal David Ward have been organized to promote reading through participation in the voluntary Accelerated Reader (AR) program, which allows students to earn points for the books they read on grade level. Selected students who met their AR goal attended a matinee performance of Sideways Stories from Wayside School at SKYPAC in Bowling Green in August.
The classroom in each grade range with the highest percentage of students reaching their AR goal, with a comprehension rate of at least 85 percent, was invited to attend a special field trip: students in Mrs. Stephanie Wheeldon’s first grade, Mrs. Elizabeth Dye’s fourth grade, and Mrs. Tina Owens’ seventh grade walked to Auburn’s First Presbyterian Church for a celebratory Veterans Day program.
Auburn School librarian Carla Abbott and library paraprofessional Teresa Morrison are busy all this week with the school’s bi-annual Book Fair. The Book Fair will run through Friday, Nov. 20, at 8:30 a.m., with special evening hours from 4-7 p.m. during K-3 parent teacher conferences on Thursday, Nov. 19. Come browse the great selection and purchase a book to take home for your child or yourself.
