February is American Heart Month and what better way to celebrate than physical activity?
On Feb. 24, the Logan County Schools’ Special Education Department will be traveling to the newest trampoline park in Bowling Green – Jump Air Zone. Students with moderate to severe disabilities will have several hours to participate on the many jumping surfaces housed within the 15,000-square foot facility.
The director of special education, Dr. Barry W. Goley, recently submitted a letter to the trampoline park requesting a designated day and time that children with disabilities could attend in a safe environment without the risk of other jumpers.
Jump Air Zone excitedly responded that Wednesdays from 10-noon will be a time that children or adults with disabilities are invited to participate without the risks or distractions of jumpers without disabilities.
Not only does this activity provide great physical activity, research suggest that jumping can improve motor and sensory skills, balance and orientation development, and facilitate social interaction, which is excellent for children on the Autism spectrum and other disabilities. Additionally, this opportunity provides the children with a sense of accomplishment while having a good time.
Goley stated, “This endeavor is two-fold. First, this is a great opportunity for our students to play and interact with their peers. Second, this celebrates Jump Air Zone’s commitment to meeting the needs of children with disabilities – kudos to Jump Air Zone!”
