In deGraffenried Auditorium on Thursday, SSG Louis Pence spoke with Russellville High School juniors regarding the National Guard. 

He stated the National Guard is our country’s oldest Branch of the Military (originally called the Militias), originating in 1636. Soldiers in the National Guard are unique in they are charged with serving and protecting the nation and the state in which they live. 

During the time of national disasters, the Kentucky National Guard is “called to duty” for search and rescue, security, and to help rebuild our communities. During times of need, the President of the United States may request the National Guard to go anywhere within the 50 states and overseas. 

Basic Training consists of 10 weeks and will provide valuable skills like leadership, fitness, survival, marksmanship, and when completed, you will be confident in yourself and your abilities. 

As a soldier in the National Guard, you serve our national and state governments, earning benefits from both. One benefit is to receive monies for college tuition. 

To qualify for the National Guard you must: 1) have a desire to excel; 2) be at least 17 years old; 3) be a high school junior, senior, or graduate; 4) have a background check; 5) pass the ASVAB test; and 6) pass the MEPS Physical. 

SSG. Pence was very thorough in his presentation and displayed his passion for the National Guard extremely well. The students received him respectfully, and he is scheduled to share with the senior class the following Friday.

He also issued an invitation to attend the National Guard “Border Bowl” Friday night at the football game, as the Panthers take on Butler County at 7 p.m.
