Auburn Elementary School, through sponsorship of the school’s Family Resource and Youth Services Center (FRYSC), hosted its first of six Born Learning workshops on Monday, Nov. 7. With over 30 parents and children in attendance, the evening was off to a great start!
After a delicious family meal provided through Webb’s Family Restaurant in Lewisburg, parents and children split into separate sessions: the children went to the library to enjoy a fun activity, while the parents remained in the cafeteria to participate in a group discussion.
Made possible through a United Way grant, Born Learning Academies are school-based family workshops, specifically for families that have a child 0-4. The workshop provide parents with the tools to help their children succeed in kindergarten and beyond. After getting to know one another through an ice-breaker, parents were able discuss and share how they were working with their child at home through everyday activities, through the facilitation of Mrs. Brandi Powell, Auburn kindergarten teacher.
When the children returned from their activities, parents and children worked together on creating a musical craft. Door prizes were then drawn for each family. All names were put in for the grand prize drawing, which will take place at the last workshop. Those prizes include a 32-inch TV, a tablet, and a year of Carpenter Center Family membership
As parents prepared to leave with their smiling children, one remarked to Hope Strode that the best part of the evening was having the chance to listen and learn about what other parents already do at home, and being able to bounce ideas off and learn from each other.
This is what the Born Learning Academy is all about, and we are looking forward to our next workshop on Dec. 5! We hope to be completing holiday activities at this workshop, and a possible visit from Santa. Any interested community member, who has a child 0-4, is invited to bring their family to attend!
