Logan sweeps Clash, clinches top district seeds

Logan County's basketball teams swept the Clash of the Cats Friday at Jim Young Gymnasium in a night that many Russellville alumni were honored. The Lady Cougars won 55-21 after leading only 11-9 after a quarter. The Cougars led all the way but had to work for 74-64 victory. Coach Lonnie Mason's Cougars clinched the top seed in the district, which will be played at LCHS. They are 5-1 in district games that count. Coach Finley Baird's Lady Cougars are 5-1 in the district and clinched at least a tie for first. Todd Central is 3-1 but the Lady Rebels are favored to win their remaining district games, which would force a coin flip for the top spot.

Logan sweeps Clash, but Panthers

turn boys game into nail-biter

After the Logan County Lady Cougars dominated their Clash with visiting Russellville 66-32 with their reserves playing much of the second half, it appeared more of the same was coming in the boys game. Coach Lonnie Mason's Cougars led by 14 points at halftime, thanks primarily to the shooting of senior guard Austin Rayno, who had piled up 22 points at the intermission. He had hit four 3-pointers by the end of the second quarter, including one from even longer distance at the buzzer. But the Panthers had other ideas. They came back by forcing Cougar turnovers and getting Rayno in foul trouble. Coach Rex Booth's team came back to take two fourth-quarter leads, including by four at 60-56. But Rayno scored four points to tie it. He and Mycah Hampton hit some big free throws at the end, and Tommy Krohn and Third Bell got some key rebounds and steals on the way to a 68-64 win. Caden McKinnis dominated inside early, and Kelby Epley played a big role in building the halftime lead. Rayno finished with 28 points, Krohn 13, Epley 12 and McKinnis 9. Krohn was a steady factor throughout. Jacob Naylor scored 25, Anthony Woodard 17, Elijah Kemp and Devin Quarles 9 each for the Panthers, but the rest of the team managed only four points. See more basketball news on The LoJo in later posts.
