On June 4, the Logan County FFA chapter took 16 members to Lexington to attend the State FFA Convention. Throughout the week members either competed or participated in other events held during convention.

This year there were five members who competed in a speech contest. Jessalyn Robey competed in Dairy Impromptu, Meelea Reno in the Greenhouse Impromptu, Hannah Price competed in the Fruits and Vegetables Impromptu, Briley Robinson competed in the Sheep or Goats Impromptu, and Rachel Taylor competed in Extemporaneous Speaking. Impromptu speakers were given two topics to pick from and prepared a six-minute speech in a 20-minute time frame. Extemporaneous speakers are given three topics to pick from and are given 30 minutes to prepare. Afterwards the speaker is asked five minutes worth of questions. Meelea and Jessalyn both placed first in their speeches and have the chance to move on to the national competition.

Another competition multiple students competed in was the Agriscience Fair. Students prepared research in one of many topics and competed against other members in their age group. Rachel Taylor’s project was “What Container Best Preserves Meat?” in the Food Products and Processing Systems category. Ashlyn Tracy and Morgan Gafford competed as a team with “Is Logan County Kentucky Proud?” in the Social Systems category. All of the competing members placed first in their division and have the chance to move onto National FFA Convention in October.

Besides competitions, members could participate in Courtesy Corp or Reporters Corp, or be a part of the Delegates.  Ethan Robey, Kolten Coomer, Korbin Deberry, Haley Hallman, Caroline Davenport, Madeline Reno, Morgan Gafford, and Lindsey Brinkley participated in the Courtesy Corp by assisting in cleaning the Lexington Convention Center. Ashlyn Tracy was on the Reporters Corp and worked backstage during sessions. Zach Milam and Rachel Taylor were delegates for our chapter. They attended meetings and represented our chapter during sessions.
