CTE students take over Kentucky State Fair
By Matthew Williams

Every year in August, thousands of Kentuckians attend the Kentucky State Fair to show pride for their state. RJSHS Instructor of Culinary Arts Ashley McGinnis and teacher Lisa Rose took their Career and Technical Education (CTE) students on a field trip to witness this event first-hand. They arrived at the Kentucky Exposition Center in the morning and began their adventure through the exhibition section.

The students learned about Kentucky's agriculture and production, and several other exhibits that gave the students an insight into the heart of Kentucky. Later on, students took part in the many activities going on indoors and outdoors. Students interacted with farm animals, competed in golf contests, watched live concerts and cooking competitions, ate from state-of-the-art food trucks, and enjoyed numerous other activities.

Russellville High School Senior Aniyah Thomas had the opportunity to participate in this event and spoke about her overall experience at the Kentucky State Fair.

Q: Have you ever been to the Ky. State Fair?

A: Nope. This was my first time, but it was a good first time. There was a lot of fun things to keep us busy and so much food to choose from. I'd say it's way bigger than the Tobacco Festival and way more people too. I'm definitely going back and next time I'm bringing a load of cash.

Q: What did you enjoy most about the field trip?

A: Well, there's a lot. I enjoyed hanging with my friends, eating the variety of foods, taking pictures, looking at all the festival-stalls, walking around, and just having fun. There was even a circus act on stage. Me and my friends sat in the balcony and watched him do these cool tricks with his assistant. It was a good day, for sure.

Q: What will you take with you from this experience?

A: Mrs. McGinnis gave us the privilege to freely enjoy the fair, so I'd say I have a new perspective on responsibility. We were in charge of ourselves and I wanted to prove I could be depended on and trusted. It was nice to go beyond the walls of our small town and do something new for once. I will definitely cherish those moments.

Q: Any parting words?

A: Shout out to Mrs. McGinnis for taking Donovan and me. School isn't so bad after all and if you haven't been to the Kentucky State Fair, go sometime. No matter your age, you can go to the fair and have a good time.

Student Council

By Ashley Cancino, David Melchor-Perez, Tristin Erby

The students of RHS will be electing presidents, vice presidents, treasurers, and secretaries for each grade level. These elected representatives will be the voice of the students body at RHS. To obtain interest and earn votes, students are sharing their campaigns on Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and Twitter. If you are running for student council make sure to promote your campaign. Election day will be during school on Friday, Aug. 31.

SKYCTC

By Chloe Shumate

Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College is where many Russellville High School students spend part of their day. There, students can learn new things and get ahead by taking college courses. Student also get the chance to learn from others because most classes have a wide variety of people. Students of all ages and backgrounds share the classroom at SKYCTC. To take these classes students must be at least a junior and benchmark on ACT, or pass one of three Kyote tests. At different times during the day Panthers can be seen getting on buses or returning from SKYCTC after an intense day of college classes. Along with taking classes at the Franklin campus, many students complete college courses through SKYCTC on RHS’ campus.

The Panther soccer team battled Logan County on Tuesday, Aug. 21 with a record of 3-0-1. In the first half the Panthers had a 1-0 lead. It all changed in the second half as the Panthers weren’t together on defense. Logan County scored 5 goals in the second half. At the end it was a tough loss for the Panthers that night, 5-1, but they look to bounce back. (By Kevin Vera & Alex Hughes)

Arts and Entertainment

FANTASTIC FIVE FEATURE FILMS

Tristin Erby, Martin Good, and Rian Saul.

Incredibles 2 - The return of a well-loved classic movie, watch this wonderful showcase of the struggles of parenting with a fantastical twist.

Death of a Nation - The brand new film reenactment of the problems of fascism and white supremacy is an excellent exposé of the truths behind history.

A-X-L - Did you enjoy Old Yeller? Did you wish it had been modernized and turned into a robot dog? Probably not, but this film gives you exactly that, but with high ratings and a beautiful CGI dog.

Alpha - Ever wanted to befriend a wild wolf? I would hope not, but in this movie, those theoretical dreams can come true! A man gets left for dead by his tribe, befriending a wolf that, in similar fashion, had been abandoned by his pack.

Kin - A young orphan boy receives a mysterious laser gun, being forced to fight off soldiers and criminals.
