Leadership Logan

The current sophomores were able to apply for a group called Leadership Logan last year. Eight kids from Russellville High School were chosen and alongside eight from Logan County. Those chosen were Josh McMurry , Cassidy Farwick, Dixie Hopkins , Taniyah Townsend, Hannah Alford, Bryant Garcia , Emma Gwynette and Chaun Cheaney. At the beginning of August, these students traveled to Robey Farms, H&R Agri-Power, and a dairy farm to talk about Logan County’s agriculture.

Then, on Tuesday, Sept. 18, Leadership Logan went to orientation at the extension office. During orientation, students got to know each other, then received handouts concerning the statistics of Logan County’s agriculture, health, and education. Students were treated an etiquette session while they enjoyed the company of one another and ate lunch.

Finally, officers were elected. Russellville’s Hannah Alford was selected as secretary.

Art Day

In the next few weeks, Global Studies teacher Corey Waters, will be holding Art Day for his students. This gives students the ability to learn more about the importance of art in history. They are currently learning about the Renaissance, which means “Rebirth” in old French. Students have learned about the Renaissance, an important part in history between 14th and 17^th centuries, and how those centuries sparked new ideas and inventions.

Mr. Waters is going to be talking about different styles of art such as statues and paintings. They include the famous paintings “The Birth of Venus” and the “Mona Lisa” and famous statues such as “David” and “Moses.” Waters is also going to be talking about the creators of the art such as Michelangelo. This gives the students of Russellville a unique opportunity to learn about the Renaissance in a very fun and creative way.    

Homecoming Week

With Autumn coming back in full swing, the peak of football season comes back with it with the RVK’s annual Homecoming Week. This year’s unique theme is GOAT, highlighting the student favorites for an array of different topics.

Monday:

Greatest sports player of all time; dress up as your favorite basketball, tennis, or even golf player!

Tuesday:

Greatest place on Earth; dress up as something inspired by your favorite place in the world.

Wednesday:

Greatest meme of all time; is it Wednesday, my dudes?

Thursday:

Greatest era of all time; be it 50’s or the Renaissance, dress up as a person from your favorite time period!

Friday:

Greatest way to Rep RVK; collaborate with your class and compete against the other classes to show the most school spirit.

Sports Happenings

Show of Bands

On Saturday, Sept. 15, the Russellville Marching Panther Band hosted the 40th annual Show of Bands at Russellville’s very own Rhea Stadium. This grand event brought seven different bands from all over Kentucky to compete against each other for various awards at the end of the night in addition to a feature performance by the Murray State Racer Band from Murray.

The bands played from 6 p.m. all the way until 8:30 p.m., some even having practiced for hours before the final performance. The Russellville Marching Panther Band played in exhibition, raising a standing ovation from the other bands. This act of support and respect between bands is a tradition carried in most every school. The visiting bands always show thanks to their hosts through showing support to their show, even though the hosts do not perform in competition, giving heavy applause to their exhibition performance at the end of the night.

After the home band performed, the Murray State Racer Band performed, calling the high school band students to come onto the field with them, as pictured. This powerful moment was met with tears, laughter, and pride in their skills, showing both the visiting and hosting bands that they had something to be proud of.

Soccer Team is Moving Forward

Russellville High school soccer team faced one of its greatest challanges this past week when they advanced to the Sectionals of the All “A” Classic where they took on Owensboro Catholic High School. The game was vital for the Russellville soccer team; a victory in this game would give RHS the opportunity to play in the state All-”A” soccer tournament. It didn’t work out that way, however.

The Panthers look to leave that loss on Tuesday behind and move forward the next five games as they play district, they look to take it a game at a time and try to play there best and win all five games.

Artist of the Week

Bob Ross once said that “Talent is a pursued interest. Anything that you're willing to practice, you can do.” In the case of Karlee Elrod, a percussion playing and artistic sophomore here at RVK, this practice has taken her entire life, but she has finally reached that point of talent.

Q: What got you into art?

A: My dad. When I was little he used to draw all the time, and I was like “Ooh! I can do that!” It was so colorful and nice, so it just fascinated me. Making things is fun to me.

Q: How would you describe your art style in three words?

A: Cringey. Awful. Bad. That’s just how it be sometimes. Honestly, I would describe my art style as cartoonish, simple, and colorful. My style is that way mostly because I am too lazy to change it, and I like colors and cartoons because I am a child.

Q: What is one thing that was a challenge for you in terms of your art?

A: Shading. It’s just so hard to figure out where the shadows go. I still don’t really know. That and humans. Humans are hard to draw.

Q: And when exactly do you think you began seriously doing art?

A: I didn’t really get serious with it until 5th grade, but I’ve always drawn. You have to draw the doodles and do the art.

Q: What is the piece of art you are most proud of?

A: I did a mermaid drawing recently that I really like, so that and this deer drawing I did.

Q: To you, what is the most important part about art?

A: To me it’s making it your own thing and like not copying?

Q: What is one goal you have for your art?

A: I mean, to overall improve I guess, I don’t really intend on using it in life...

Q: What is the biggest inspiration you have for your art?

A: Probably just other artists. I see them and I think “Ooh! I want to fit in! Yes! Give me a group!”

Q: What is one art platform or style you’d like to dive into someday?

A: All of them.

Q: And do you intend on pursuing a career in that field?

A: Nope. I do not.

Q: Do you have any advice you’d like to give to aspiring artists?

A: Don’t stop drawing just because you feel like you suck because I still feel like I suck, and always practice anatomy. Don’t be afraid to be adventurous or draw stupid stuff: stupid stuff is fun!
