Two teams of educators from Logan County Schools have attended recent trainings on providing care for students who have been exposed to significant trauma during their lifetime.

One team, composed of administrators and school psychologists from the Central Office staff, included Dr. Barry Goley, Rachel Wetton, Annelle White, and Shannon Batchelor. The other team was composed of Chandlers Assistant Principal Bonnie Spears and several teachers from Chandlers.

Statistics have shown that one in every four students has been exposed to trauma during their school careers. Project AWARE is part of a grant initiative through the University of Kentucky Center on Trauma and Children.

The initiative includes four days of professional development, which is scheduled throughout the 2018-19 school year. The goal of this initiative and training is to create trauma informed schools that are better able to reduce the effects of trauma on students.

Throughout this school year, the teams will continue their training to gain more understanding regarding the effects of trauma as well as how to identify students affected by it. The teams will then develop strategies within the school environment to decrease the effects of trauma, as well as to identify ways to incorporate these strategies into existing positive behavior intervention systems that are currently being utilized within each school building.

Further information about this initiative can be found on the UK Center on Trauma and Children website, http://www.uky.edu/CTAC/ .
