Names are the fuel that propels The Logan Journal. Every year the number of people who are named in the online newspaper grows, In the last six months of the fourth year of The LoJo (Aug. 1, 2012-Jan. 31, 2013), a total of 2,555 people were mentioned at least once in a story or a news brief. Of that group, 112 of them were in at least five stories.
As usual, the people with the most mentions are sports figures---players and coaches. Five of the top six mentions are multi-sports athletes. For example, the leader, Russellville junior Barrett Croslin, is the Panthers’ starting shortstop, quarterback and shooting guard. Second place Landon Stratton, a Logan County junior, is the Cougars’ top scorer in soccer, the place kicker in football, and the shooting guard on the basketball team. And the top female and third overall, LCHS junior Katelyn Jones, starts in volleyball and started much of the season in basketball.
Interestingly enough, following athletes Coco Darden, Torin Graham and Zach Hines, is number seven Mark Abbott, whose photographs have accompanied 18 stories plus many news briefs.
The person mentioned most often who is not involved in sports is state representative Martha Jane King. Ten of the non-sports people who were mentioned in six or more stories are present or former office holders. Russellville Principal Kim McDaniel, who does a tremendous job of letting the public know what is happening at the city high school and junior high, is second in the category, while the third place finisher in this group is Diane Crawley, who takes her role seriously in informing people about what is going on in Logan County Adult Education.
