A Letter to Our Community

Our students and teachers, school and district leaders and the support staff of Logan County Schools deserve praise for working hard in their roles. But equally deserving of praise are the members of our Board of Education, not only for their work but for their leadership.
When it comes to devotion to what is in the best interest of our students, no community has a finer group of citizen leaders than our Board of Education. Chairman Kenneth Robertson (Adairville), Vice Chairman John Dawson (Olmstead), Ralph Cropper (Lewisburg), Tim Hall (Auburn) and Phil Baker (Chandlers) are more than just elected officials. They are the link between the community and our schools. Many people understand that our Board is responsible for setting and balancing a budget of more than $35 million and establishing policies and procedures, but they also address the concerns raised by students, staff, parents and our community in order to create the conditions that enable students to succeed. Most people have no concept of the countless hours each of our Board members spend in preparing for monthly meetings, attending student events, and listening to the concerns of others. I am proud to serve alongside each of them
The state of Kentucky has chosen to join other states in observing January as School Board Member Recognition Month, the 20th year in which it has done so. Our local school board members merit this appreciation.
As the demands of high-stakes accountability have increased for our schools, the job of our local board members has likewise become increasingly complex, requiring more time, training and knowledge. They also must ensure the safety and maintenance of school buildings and buses, support teachers by making sure they have adequate professional development, lead the charge for programs that help students of every ability level and closely monitor the finances of the school system. There is not a single aspect of overall district operation that is not tied to the work of our board members.
So please remember, next time you see one of our Board members, just lean over and say “Thank You” for what they do on behalf of our children. That is all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than any other formal recognition.
Two little words that mean a lot, "THANK YOU".
