When Logan County High School Family and Consumer Sciences instructor JoElla Morrow challenged her Culinary II class to come up with a name for an idea she was working on, it was with somewhat surprise they came up with the term “Famished.”
By definition, famished means extremely hungry, an antonym for what she was going for, but it stuck just the same. Each Thursday for the weeks following Spring Break, her Culinary II class is participating in a catering/ restaurant simulation. Weekly, students prepare a new menu, execute its preparation, and then deliver their selections to eager LCHS faculty members-- for a small fee.
Just as in an actual restaurant setup, patrons, being the faculty members, order ahead giving the preparers ideas to their demand which will affect the market order and preparation plans. For selections, students have been researching recipes, finding favorites, and at times tweaking them to taste. Week One selections included Teriyaki Chicken Stir-Fry, vegetables, and slice of fudge pie for dessert. Week Two selections are centered on things you might expect for breakfast; a vegetarian quiche or sausage, egg, and cheese soufflé serve as main courses.
The dining experiment has been well received. Sophomore English instructor Abby Powers remarked, “The food was delicious and honestly had some of the best fried rice I have eaten in a long time.” Others reported their meals were delivered hot and on time and encouraged any faculty member who had not already taken advantage of the meal service or signed up for the next installment to “do it now!”
