April 19 – 25 marks National Volunteer Week—an opportunity to recognize and thank volunteers who lend their time, talent, voice, and support to causes they care about.
The Auburn Historical Society has depended on volunteers since its inception 24 years ago. The Society was incorporated in 1996 by Mrs. Eloise Hadden and grew to national acclaim as 136 landmarks were added to the National Register of Historic Places and the Auburn Museum was formed.
The organization and museum began its formation in the early 1990s with a myriad of dedicated volunteers over the years who donated time, money, and artifacts. Because of these generous donations, as well as grant money, there is nothing owed on the property. Monetary or artifact donations continue to be welcomed.
Mrs. Hadden retired from Auburn Historical Society a few years ago, but the organization remains run by a 8-person board of directors who include: Phyllis Millner (chair) 2013-present, Darrell Crawford (vice chair) 2017-present, John Sheffield (treasurer) 2010 - present, Elizabeth Teal (2017 – present), Ben Kemplin (2018 - present), Sarah Herron (2019 – present), Hattie Carter (2020) and Karen Kirsch-Smith (2020).
“The Society has a fantastic team of volunteers who provide their time and energy all across our organization. We are fortunate to have each and every one. I’d like to extend my thanks to each of them (both past and present), as well as Mrs. Hadden, during National Volunteer Week,” said chairman Phyllis Millner. “We are always looking for people who want to share their skills and experience and would welcome inquiries from potential volunteers.”
