Michael Gough Group in Blues concert series
The Russellville Blues’ Mary Ann Fisher Summer Concert Series features one of its own, the Michael Gough Group Saturday. Events begin at 7 p.m. at the West Kentucky African American Heritage Museums at the corner of Sixth and Morgan Streets in Russellville. The all-star lineup will include Russellville native Ernest Raymer on the Hammond organ, John Martin on the guitar, Criss Cheatham on guitar and drms, Rodney Williams on drums, Ed Dansereau on piano, Roy Carter on tenor saxa-phone, and Russellville's Gough on bass guitar. Blues publicist Susan Morris of Bowling Green says, "Because of conflicting schedules, this ensemble of talented individuals has never shared a stage, UNTIL NOW!" Come in time to enjoy local food and beverage vendors, along with area artists.

Monica Edwards leaving Logan Public Library

The architect of the Leaders in Training program at Logan County Public Library, Monica Edwards, was bid "bon voyage" at the library in Russellville Thursday. She is becoming Outreach Team Manager for Warren County Public Library where she will be in charge of three branches and two mobile units. She has been at the Logan library for 11.5 years, serving as Public Service Supervisor and Youth Services Supervisor. She has helped develop some 450 young leaders and has conducted Story Time for count-less youngsters for over a decade. She is a Glasgow native who began her career with Barren County YMCA. Another Bon Voyage party will be held on the morning of her final day, July 15.
Lee Dockins world's best Special Olympics gymnast
Logan County High School graduate Lee Dockins won the gold medal Tuesday in Best All Around gymnastics competition in the Special Olympics World Games in Athens, Greece. According to her aunt, Paige Golden Dockins, she also earned golds in balance beam and floor routine, silver on the uneven bars and bronze on the vault. Dockins, who also excelled in the Games four years ago in China, is accompanied by her parents, Harris and Sharon Dockins, and her brother, John Logan Dockins.

Gettings to preview new Creekwood site Tuesday;
groundbreaking on Boyles Drive set for July 6
The Logan County Republican Women's Club will welcome Elizabeth Gettings, administrator of Creekwood Place Nursing and Rehab Center, to its Tuesday meeting, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Republican Headquarters on Main Street. She will accept a donation to CPNRC from the club's "Pennies From Heaven" campaign. She will update plans for Creekwood Place's new facility, which is to be located on Boyles Drive off the Nashville Road by Baptist Homes, Inc. and Russellviille Senior Housing. A groundbreaking is scheduled for Wednesday, July 6 at noon. The public is invited to Tuesday night's meeting. Light refreshments will be served.

Learning Center opened, Tom Thompson honored

The Logan County Professional Learning Center was officially opened and a dedicated educator was honored Friday. The Logan County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting for what is generally known as the adult learning center in its new location in the former site of the extension office on South Spring Street. Laurie Holloway, who is treasurer of both the Chamber and the learning center, spoke, and center director Cheryl Kelley talked Tom Thompson, who has taught adult learning for five years after his retirement as a Russellville special education teacher. Thompson has taught many classes in the detention center. He is now going into full-time ministry, beginning with two Presbyterian churches in Butler County.

Johnson, McCarley elected to R'ville Christian board
Dairy farmer David Johnson and Jennifer McCarley, wife of Crittenden Drive Church of Christ youth miiister Daniel McCarley, were named to the board of directors of Russellvillle Christian School during a meeting of the members of Crittenden Drive after worship services Sunday. The non-profit school has served the community for 35 years. The church furnishes the building and utilities. Other board members are Chairman Brian White, Amy Taylor, Samantha Hamilton and Raye Ann Clark.

Ham radio field day underway at City-County Park
The Southern Kentucky Amateur Transmitting Society is demonstrating amateur park at City-County Park in Russellville. Members are set up in the Logan County Search and Rescue trailer near the tennis courts. They are joining thousands of other 'hams' across the world who are observing Field Day to conclude Amateur Radio Week. Using only emergency power supplies, they are showing anyone who would like to see their operation how messages can be sent without the use of phones, internet or any other form of infrastructure. According to Sonja Logan, the demonstration will last until noon Sunday.

Adairville Car Show rescheduled from Festival
The Adairville-South Logan Chamber of Commerce Car and Tractor Show will be held today from 1-4 p.m. on the Town Square. The show is open to all categories of cars, trucks, tractors, lawn tractors, and motorcycles. Trophies will be awarded to participants and raffle drawings for prizes will be held throughout the day, with a grand prize of two tickets, with All Access passes to the NASCAR Nationwide Federated 300 Race, Nashville Superspeedway, to be run Saturday, July 23. Two high performance Holley carburetors will also be raffled. Vendors are welcome. Benefit dinner, auction planned for baby's family
A grilled chicken dinner and benefit auction will begin at 5 p.m. Friday to help Elmer and Mary Yoder with the medical expenses for their baby, Dora Mae Yoder, will has been in Vanderbilt Hospital since April 28. This will be at the homes of the Eli Masts on Goodman Road, which is slightly over five miles from Lewisburg off 106 East and the L.McReynolds roads. Lady Rams finish 2-1, join LCHS in Team Character
Not only did the Olmstead Lady Rams finish 10-1 in the George-town Basketball Camp last week, but the team coached by Dan-iel Alvis and Chris Wilcutt joined Logan County Lady Cougars varsity and junior varsity squads in receiving the Team Character award.

Columnist who wrote tribute to Mom lauds Dad today
A little over a month ago on Mother's Day, we gave readers a link to a column by Lewisburg alum Fadocia Annette Nole Hall that she had written for her mother, Geneva Bilbrey. of Logan County. Summer children’s theatre to begin Monday
Russellville Arts-Summer Children's Theatre will produce "School House Rock" on June 20-24 at the historic Logan County Court-house. Second graders through seniors are invited to auditions at 9 a.m. Monday. Practice will be held each day from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The fee is $10 for the week. The director is Elizabeth Hadle, the choreographer Jessica Williams, the music director Larry Vaught and the production assistant Melanie Manley. Participants should bring a sack lunch daily. Small classes will be conducted throughout the week to the students on improvisation, make-up, auditioning techniques. Questions? Hot Rods clinch first-ever playoff berth
Phil Wunderlich homered and drove in five runs and C.J. Riefen-hauser pitched seven strong innings to lead the Bowling Green Hot Rods to a 7-2 playoff-clinching win over the South Bend Silver Hawks (33-34) in Indiana Friday night. Thanks to the victory and a loss by the Lansing Lugnuts in Dayton, the Hot Rods have se-cured a playoff berth and have a chance to win the outright Eastern Division First-Half Title Saturday night.
The Hot Rods now have a magic number of one to clinch against South Bend on Saturday night.. LHP Enny Romero (2-3, 5.37) makes his final start of the first half against LHP Patrick Schuster (5-3, 3.13). Logan Relay for Life scheduled tonight at LCHS

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life will be held 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday at Logan County High School. Relay teams will take turns walking, running or strolling around the track. At 9 p.m. all participants will share in a special luminaria ceremony to remember those individuals who have been affected by cancer. Candles will be lit in honor or memory of cancer patients and placed around the perimeter of the track. Terrie and Pee Wee Lawson are in charge of the event. Belinda Ray is the chair of Survivor events.

Griffin Joiner named Miss Kentucky Softball
According to her aunt, Ann Shelton Bailey, of Lewisburg, Griffin Joner of Christian County has been named Miss Kentucky Soft-ball and Kentucky Gatorade Players of the Year. The great-of Mary E. Smith of Spa, the Christian County High School salutatorian is headed to the University of Kentucky on a full scholarship where she will be part of the softball team. In addition to relatives mentioned in a recent Speaking of Sports, she is also a cousin of Tim Smith and his twin sisters, Kelly Steenbergen & Shelly Dillard, a player and cheerleaders on Russellville's first state football championship team in 1980. Griffin's dad, David Joiner, was named regional coach of the year and he and his assistants were chosen as Class 3A softball coaching staff of the year.

Jerry Abramson to visit Logan Friday
The longest-serving mayor in Louisville history, Jerry Abramson, will be at Democratic headquarters in Russellville Friday as part of his campaign for lieutenant governor on the Democratic ticket along with Gov.Steve Beshear. He is expected to be there shortly after 10 a.m. and the public is invited.

Hot Rods offer free food at Wednesday's game

The Bowling Green Hot Rods have announced a new promotion designed to attract food fanatics and baseball fans alike. On Wednesday, June 15, the Hot Rods invite fans out for a 7:05 p.m. game with the West Michigan Whitecaps featuring an all-you-can-eat style element. All fans in attendance receive a ticket, Fans can pick up as many as three of these ballpark favorites with each trip to the concession stands.

Shifflett tops area batters; others on leader list
In the final listings compiled by the Bowling Green Daily News, Russellville junior Thomas Shifflett had the highest batting average among players from the seven schools reporting with a .465. Also in the top 10 were #4 Dustin Cartas of Logan County (.437) and two from RHS, $5 Seth Washington and #7 D.J. Quarles (.405). Shifllett was tied for 4th in hits with 47 and Cartas right behind with 46 while Logan's John Logan Dockins was 9th at 39. In RBIs, Cougar Ryan Harper was 5th with 37, Cartas 7th (34), Shifflett 8th (33) and Dockins 10th (32).
Among the pitchers, Logan's Lawton Jackson was tied with professional baseball draftee Mark Biggs of Warren East for 4th in ERA (2.28) and tied for 2nd in wins (7-3). Cougar Dustin Nash was 6th in ERA (2.41) and 4th in wins (6-3). Dockins was 5th in record (5-2) and teammate Thomas Miller was 10th in ERA (3.00).
The seven schools included the top three in records, East (28-12), Bowling Green (23-12) and Logan (22-11) along with the bottom three, Greenwood (15-17), Butler County (11-17) and South Warren (12-19). RHS was in the middle of the 13 teams in the Daily News area with a 15-11 mark.

Former Logan coach on Kentucky All-Stars staff

Chris Souder , who who was the head basketball coach of the Logan County Cougars from 1992-96, was an assistant coach for the Kentucky All-Stars girls team which split a pair of games against Indiana this weekend. He has been highly successful as the head girls coach at his alma mater, Mercer County, since the 1999-2000 season. He also coached Cougar baseball.

AC-S beats #1 Ballard twice Saturday for state title
The Allen County-Scottsville Lady Patriots won the state softball championship Saturday, beating Louisville Ballard 3-2 in the finals at Owensboro after knocking the Bruins (39-6) into the losers' bracket 9-4 Saturday morning. Coach Rick Roberts' team finished 41-5 with junior Kelsi Pardue doing the pitching. It's been a special year for AC-S, with the football team reaching the Class 4A state finals.

Farmers Market to open for 2011 Saturday morning
The Logan County Farmers Market will open for the season Saturday morning at the UK Ag Complex on the U.S. 68-80 bypass across from the Marathon station. The vegetable market will be open Saturdays from 8 a.m.-noon on Saturdays and from noon to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays through October. The market is starting later than usual because of inclement weather during the traditional planting season.

Library instituting fee for out-of-county borrowers
Beginning July 1, all patrons of Logan County Public Library who do not reside in or own property in Logan County will be required to pay $25 per year for a library card, according to notices posted at the library. Those who have questions or comments are invited to talk with Library Director Linda Kompanik.

Riley's top assistant to succeed him at Central
William Unseld
has been named head boys basketball coach at Warren Central High School, according to the Bowling Green Daily News. Unseld, a 1992 Central graduate, played basketball for South Carolina before coming home. He has been on the staff of legendary Dragons coach Tim Riley, who is now on the Lady Topper staff at WKU. Todd Steward is the Central athletic director.

Federal grant to assist cleanup, create temporary jobs
U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield, chairman of the House Subcommittee on Energy and Power, today announced that the U.S. Department of Labor has awarded a National Emergency Grant (NEG) for Ken-tucky to create temporary jobs dedicated to cleanup efforts from this spring’s weather disasters.
The grant, for $4,276,514, will be awarded to the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet. The NEG funds will be used to create about 317 temporary jobs for eligible dislocated workers to assist with cleanup and recovery efforts as a result of this spring’s weather. Hired employees will assist with projects including cleanup, demolition, repair, renovation, and reconstruction of destroyed public structures, facilities, and lands within the affected communities across Kentucky. Workers may also assist with the delivery of humanitarian aid and safety assistance as necessary. Logan is one of the eligible counties.

Purple Martin Festival set Thursday through Saturday
To start the Purple Martin Festival, Leroy Troy will be in concert at the Lewisburg City Complex, Thursday beginning at 6 p.m. General admission tickets ($10 each) can be purchased at Lewisburg City Hall or by visiting www.cityoflewisburg.com
A pancake feast from 6 a.m.-1 p.m. and a Rook tournament beginning at 6 p.m. are the events of the Purple Martin Festival today. The theme is “Lewisburg--Fond Memories & A New Beginning,"
Events in the final day of the Purple Martin Festival at Lewisburg include a tractor show, “Rock ‘til You Drop,” Kiddie Games & Inflatables, & a History Show, all beginning at 10 a.m., along with historical tours at 10:30, 11:45, 1:30 and 3, and the Purple Martin Rally at 1 p.m. Additionally there will be music, food, vendors and yard sales all day, raffles, a cruise-in and a movie in the park.

Fisher artifacts to be presented as concerts begin
On Monday, June 6, at noon at the West Kentucky African American Heritage Museum in Russellville, a press conference will be held to open the Mary Ann Fisher Summer Concert Series and the acquisition of artifacts from friends of Mary Ann Fisher. A blues singer who recorded with such legends as Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye and lived in Russellville for several years, Fisher had her memory honored when the West Kentucky African American Heritage Museum created a series of summer blues concerts bearing her name.
This year’s festival will begin Saturday, June 11 with a performance by South Carolina blues singer Wanda Johnson, along with a band featuring harmonica legend William Howse of Nashville. On Monday at the press conference, close associates of Fisher will present evening gowns and jewelry to the museum for an exhibit which will open during the August 8th African American Emancipation Celebration.

Lon Sosh to celebrate 53rd radio anniversary
He can't be in studio, but radio personality Lon Sosh will observe his 53rd anniversary as a radio personality today on WRUS. He will appear with Chris McGinnis on Feedback from 9:05-10 a.m. Sosh had just completed his sophomore year at Russellville High School when he went to work for his dad, station owner Winky Sosh. Lon later became owner of the AM and FM stations. He has been hospitalized much of this year and is currently a patient at Greenview Hospital in Bowling Green where doctors are trying to regulate his blood. He will talk by phone on station 610 AM.

LCHS grad Josh Matthews to coach F-S girls
Josh Matthews,
a graduate of Logan County High School who has been a head NCAA women's coach the past five years at Henderson State University in Arkansas, has been named head girls coach at Franklin-Simpson High School, succeeding Lex Lindsey, who is now the F-S boys coach. Matthews' dad, Bob Matthews, was a successful girls coach at both F-S and Russell-ville High School. Josh Matthews played basketball for Louisburg Community College in North Carolina and was an assistant coach for the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers in the late 90s. His mother, Nancy Matthews, worked in Probation and Parole in Logan County
