Logan and colleges closed, but
RHS and BGHS plan to be open
Logan County Schools, SKYCTC, WKU and Simpson County Schools have announced they will not be open Wednesday because of extreme weather conditions. The Russellville @RVK Panthers Twitter account has declared it "Wear Your Beanie Day" at RJSHS. Bowling Green Schools also plan to be open.

Middle school tournament begins
The Logan County Middle School Basketball Tournament begins tonight at Logan County High School with the numbers 4 and 5 seeds going against each other. In the girls bracket at 6, it will be Chandlers and Adairville. The winner will play number one seed Auburn Saturday at 9 a.m. In the boys bracket tonight, Lewisburg and Chandlers will meet at 7:30. The survivor advances to meet number one Adairville at 10:30 Saturday. Olmstead is the number 3 seed in both divisions. Championship games will be Saturday evening.

Quarles to speak at Chamber Ag Appreciation Breakfast Wednesday
Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture Ryan Quarles will be the guest speaker at the Logan Chamber of Commerce’s annual Agriculture Appreciation Breakfast Wednesday at 7 a.m. at the Logan County Extension Office. Russellville Schools seeking information on alumni
Russellville Schools hope to get alumni more involved in school activities and promotions. Plans are being formulated for expanding the Russellville Alumni Association and creating a related Friends of Russellville group. Activities and benefits for members are being formulated. Superintendent Bart Flener encourages anyone who attended the city schools or wants to be involved in supporting them to send an email to alumni@russellville.kyschools.us. It should include name, year of graduation, email address, cell phone number and physical mailing address.

Schools split wins in Clash of the Cats
The Russellville Lady Panthers led the entire game by as much as 22 points on the way to a 56-52 upset of homestanding Logan County in the Clash of the Cats Friday. In the second game the Logan County Cougars also led the entire game, withstood some RHS runs, and beat the Panthers 61-47. Watch The LoJo for more complete stories of the games in the next few days,

C-USA coaching award
named for Phillip Hatchett
From WKU Athletic Director Todd Stewart: At the NCAA Convention this weekend, Conference USA Presidents and Athletic Directors voted to change the name of the conference's Men's Golf Coach of the Year to the "Phillip Hatchet Coach of the Year." Mr. Hatchett, a native of and resident of Russellville, was the Hilltopper golf coach when he had his life taken from him by an inattentive driver on U.S. 68-80 while biking last summer.

Pedigos lead Trojanettes past Logan
When Logan County's Kennedy Nichols scored to put her team up 9-8, Barren County went on a 19-4 run the rest of the first quarter. The Lady Cougars never could catch up and fell 65-53 in Glasgow. The Trojanettes were led by the Pedigos. Bailey Pedigo hit 8 of 10 free throws on the way to 20 points, and Mallory Pedigo added 15. Sarah Beth Hale led Logan with 17 points while Paige Vanzant and Nichols added 9 each.

RHS track named
for Coach Matt Tipton
In a unanimous vote Tuesday, the Russellville Board of Education approved naming the track at Russellville High School Matt Tipton Track. The late Mr. Tipton coached track and field at the school for 42 seasons, beginning in 1974. It's one of the longest tenures for a coach in any sport in state history. His athletes won over 20 state championships and the entire team was state runner-up twice. He was also the first coach of Lady Panther basketball and is still the longest serving coach in that program's history. Paulette Benton Smith and Ann Page Province McReynolds made the recommendation to the board as part of a committee studying the proposal.

From Melanie Manley: Auditions for Willy Wonka Jr. for 5th-8th grade will be Thursday, Jan. 24 from 3:30-5:30 p.m, and Friday, Jan. 25, from 3:30-5:30 at the LCHS library. You just pick one day to attend. Prepare a short song to audition with! We will have callbacks if necessary on Saturday, Jan. 26. The show is scheduled to be performed the last weekend of April. (Younger students for ensemble auditions will be at a later date.)

Russellville Schools in,
Logan out Tuesday
Russellville Schools will be in session Tuesday. Logan County Schools won't, at least in person. The two systems made those announcements on Twitter Monday. The city schools have not been in session since Wednesday. They were closed Thursday and Friday because of widespread illness and on Monday for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. observance. Logan was out Monday for MLK Day. Both would have undoubtedly been dismissed Monday because of the estimated three-inch snow Saturday night along with the bitter cold. WRUS reported the early morning temperature at six degrees. Russellville Superintendent Bart Flener praised the efforts of road crews and school staff in cleaning streets and parking lots. Logan is the eighth largest county in Kentucky and many backroads are difficult to clear. This will be the first Non Traditional Instruction Day of the year for Logan students to study at home.

Monica Edwards, who played key roles for Logan County Public Library for several years before leaving for the Warren County Public Library, has been named director of the William B. Harlan Memorial Library in Monroe County. A going away party is going to be held Friday, Jan. 25, from4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Historic RailPark and Train Museum on Kentucky Street in Bowling Green. Her friends and admirers are invited.

Arts council plans summer
drama productions in June
The Russellville Arts Council in Kentucky has announced its Summer Drama productions for June. President Larry Vaught says, “We will be featuring a Dance Camp based on the story line of 101 Dalmatians for students in third to fifth grades (June 3-7). For our sixth graders through graduating seniors, we will be featuring the ground breaking Rodger and Hammerstein musical Oklahoma ...one of the most fun musicals ever produced! (June 24-29). The Logan County Lady Cougars’ scheduled basketball games with Edmonson County and Hancock County have been canceled, Athletic Director Greg Howard has announced. Also, the Cougars’ games Freshmen/JV games against Warren Central Feb. 9 are no longer on the schedule.

F-S comes back to edge Cougars
Logan County built a 30-15 lead at Franklin-Simpson Friday but then let it get away in a 57-52 district loss. The Wildcats and their fans kept Cougars Anthony Woodard out of his regular rhythm throughout the game, and foul trouble (both those called on them and free throws they missed) hurt the team. DeMarco Chatman scored 23 points and Dawson Knight 10 for Coach Dee Spencer's Wildcats, who ran their record to 10-7 overall and 3-1 in the district. Logan fell to 15-3 and 3-1. Tommy Krohn led the Cougars with 16 points and Kelby Epley added 11.

Logan at Franklin tonight
An important 13th District Basketball doubleheader will be played Friday night when the Logan County Lady Cougars and Cougars go to Franklin-Simpson. Both Logan teams are undefeated in district play, and wins tonight would go a long way toward sealing the number one seeds in the district tournament. WRUS 610 and 94.1 will carry both games live. They will also be available on the station's website and mobile ap.

Elkton street to be
named for Guy Mallory
The city of Elkton will hold a ceremony on Friday (today) at 1 p.m. to unveil the re-naming of North Weathers Lane to Mr. Guy Mallory Lane. The street was re-named by the Elkton City Council in honor of Mr. Guy Mallory, a model citizen of Elkton who served his country valiantly in World War II and the Conflict in Korea. Mr. Mallory gave freely to his community, including land donations to the Todd County Senior Citizens Center and Todd County Public Library. Mr. Mallory also retired from the US Postal Service, working in the Post Office in Elkton that sits adjacent to the newly re-named Mr. Guy Mallory Lane. The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which will take place at Mr. Guy Mallory Lane and the intersection of West Main Street in Elkton.

icon Steven Lyne resigns
One of the most successful coaches in Fourth Region history in any sport has resigned. Logan County Volleyball Coach Steven Lyne told his players Tuesday that he has resigned as coach of the ultra-successful Lady Cougars. He has been with the program ever since it began almost two decades ago, first as the top assistant to Coach
Tina Phelps and then as head coach the past eight seasons. With him at the helm, Logan Volleyball went 64-0 against district competition and captured all eight district titles. Overall, they have won over 120 consecutive district matches and 16 straight district titles. Assistant Coach James Imlay says, "He just told us 'it's time.'" An LCHS graduate, Lyne is a livestock farmer, and his family has a specialized coffee distribution business.

Lady Panthers advance
to Class A semifinals
With sophomore Chloe Whitescarver hitting five 3-pointers and scoring 21 points, Coach Cameron Jackson’s Russellville Lady Panthers advanced to the Class A Regional Semifinals Monday by beating visiting Cumberland County 58-41. Supporting Whitescarver with nine points each were DeShala LeBlanc, Anastasia Dowlen & Amiyah Collier. The Lady Panthers led 39-27 after three quarters before Whitescarver hit a pair of treys and LeBlanc a third in the first 90 seconds of the final period. When Dowlen hit a rebound shot, RHS led by 20 with 3:30 left. Cambria Vincent of Edmonson County scored 20 points by hitting 13 of 17 free throws. Carly Patterson added 11. Russellville plays host Todd Central in Wednesday’s second round at 6 p.m.

Logan County High School baseball and football standout Koby Wall will sign with Lindsey Wilson to play baseball. His signing will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 3:30 p.m. at the CTC building. Athletic Director Greg Howard says, “Everyone is invited to come celebrate Koby's special day!”

From WRUS: The City of Russellville Water Department will begin working on Honeysuckle Lane, in the Brookhaven Subdivision, on Tuesday, Jan. 15. The city will be replacing the two-inch water mains in the area. The City of Russellville apologizes for any inconvenience this work may have on its citizens. Lady Panthers get district win
Trailing 18-15 at the half, the Russellville Lady Panthers held visiting Franklin-Simpson to four third quarter points and beat Coach Lex Lindsey’s Lady Cats 41-31 Friday. RHS led 33-22 going into the fourth quarter. Led by eighth grader Hadley Turner, F-S cut the lead to 34-29. But Russellville’s Anastasia Dowlen converted a rebound into three points, and Deshala LeBlanc and Jayce Buchner each hit a pair of free throws for the 10-point district win. For Coach Cameron Jackson’s winners, LeBlanc led the way with 10 points while Dowlen had 8 points and 13 rebounds. Chloe Whitescarver also scored 8, some of them clutch in the second half, Buchner added 7 and Amiyah Collier 6. Evyn McCutchen scored 13 and Turner 10. The only other F-S players to score were Christina Carver & Kate Norwood.

as Lady Cougars double Todd
Finding themselves down 7-4 early in the game, the Logan County Lady Cougars went on an 18-1 run the rest of the quarter Friday over visiting Todd Central. Coach Finley Baird’s Ladies led 22-8 when Haile Borders scored on a Blayke Bingham assist near the buzzer. By the end of the third quarter, Logan had built a running clock and won 73-36 to run their record to 11-5 overall and 3-0 in the district. Paige Vanzant, who caused repeated Todd turnovers, finished with 18 points. Addie White, who hit all 6 of her free throws, scored 13, Sarah Beth Hale 11 and Kennedy Nichols 9. The other eight Lady Cougars all scored. Amy Brumfield scored 13 for the visitors but no other Lady Rebel had more than 5 points.

The Russellville-Logan County NAACP will sponsor the MLK Jubilee Celebration on Saturday, Jan. 12, beginning at 9 a.m. at the K of P Hall on 5th and Morgan Streets, Russellville. The guest speaker is Associate Minister Jessie F. Varner of Oakland Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Warren County. President William Woodard says, "The community is invited to celebrate the History and Legacy of our late Civil Rights Leader. Breakfast will be served for a donation of $7."

Long-time RHS teacher
Peggy Reeder dies
Peggy Reeder, who taught at Russellville High School along with her husband Larry Reeder from the mid-60s until their retirement, died Tuesday morning in Florida where the Reeders have made their home for several years. Since Mr. Reeder is incapacitated, long-time friends Denny and Martha Carol Doyle are handling arrangements, according to Mark and Jean Reynolds.

Cougars dominate first half of Clash
The visiting Logan County Cougars outscored Russellville 23-5 in the second quarter to take a 44-20 lead into halftime of the Mullen-Meguiar Cats Classic Friday. Anthony 'Rooster' Woodard, who transferred from RHS to Logan this year, dominated much of the first-half play, scoring 12 points along with rebounding, firing, manning the point and making repeated steals. After he drew his second foul with 1:30 left in the first quarter, Panther star Jacob Naylor didn't score in the second quarter and had 8 points at the half. Kelby Epley scored 8 points in the half with Nathaniel Vick & Third Bell scoring 6 each. Reggie Powell was a force on the boards for Coach John Tinsley's Cougars. Naylor had scored 12 more points with two minutes left in the third quarter but the Cougars were leading 55-41. Woodard was up to 18 points.

RHS in Clash's 1st half
With Addie White hitting three straight 3-pointers (the third was ruled to have come after the buzzer), the Logan County Lady Cougars led homestanding Russellville 24-7 after a quarter. Paige Vanzant had 12 points and her twin Peyton Vanzant 7 at halftime as Coach Finley Baird's Lady Cougars led 40-20 at the half. A key player for both teams, Sarah Beth Hale of Logan and Amiyah Collier of RHS got into early foul trouble. The Lady Cougars built the lead to 31 points before Collier scored the Lady Panthers' first points of the second half to make it 51-22 with 3:26 remaining in the third quarter. When the fourth quarter began, Logan led 55-23.

Items needed for homeless
family moving into own home
A homeless family consisting of a mother and five children ages 3-14 is moving closer to having a home, but they need help. They have lived in one room at the Jesus Community Center in East Russellville for over a month, but they now have access to a two-room home. Dorris West of Concerned Citizens says donations of beds, bed clothing, pots and pans, small appliances, drapes, etc. are needed. Items can be brought to Concerned Citizens on East Fifth Street between 8 a.m.-2 p.m. this Wednesday through Friday or from 8-3 next week.

Landon Stratton making history in Sugar Bowl New Years night
While number five ranked Georgia plays number 15 Texas tonight in the Sugar Bowl at the Superdome in New Orleans, a player is making local history. Georgia’s Landon Stratton is believed to be the first-ever Logan Countian to be a member of a team playing in a New Year’s Day Bowl Game. Stratton is a punter for the Bulldogs, who are hoping to cement widespread belief that Georgia is the third best college football team in the nation. Stratton was a three-sport standout at Logan County High School and is the son of Russellville Mayor and First Lady Mark and Connie Stratton.
