Two alumni of Logan County High School are among the Surgical Technology students from Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKYCTC) who placed first in the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) “Scrub Bowl” held at their regional Spring conference at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College on April 26. The SKYCTC students competed with ten other in-state college teams and one out-of-state team.

The Logan duo consists of Laura Hendricks and Emily Croslin, who are graduating from the Surgical Tech program at SKYCTC next week.

The format of the contest consisted of AST representatives asking questions about surgical procedures, instruments, and processes involved in surgery. The teams used a lock-out buzzer system to give their answers.

The other first place SKYCTC Surgical Technology team members competing were: Halimah Aldarawish (Warren County), Bethany Echols (Warren County), Courtney Estes (Barren County), Ashley Fraire (Warren County), Taylor Goodwin (Warren County), Courtney Hargis (Warren County), Jonathan Howard (Warren County), Taylor Kinnarney (Warren County), Rebekah Lancaster (Barren County), Taylor Lillybridge (Warren County), Sara Richardson (Warren County), and Crystal Tyree (Simpson County).

The Association of Surgical Technologists was established in 1969 by members of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the American Hospital Association (AHA), and the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN).

AST, the only national organization that represents more than 80,000 surgical technologists, is governed by an 11-member Board of Directors. On the local level, 50 formed state assemblies address member concerns and issues.
