Four Logan County High School rising seniors are part of the Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program for the summer of 2019. Those who received appointments into the program are Ashlyn Canler, Jayden Hayes, Morgan Gafford, and Micah Page.
Ashlyn Canler is the daughter of Shawn & Kim Canler of Auburn. She is a member of the school’s Band, Beta Club, FBLA, STEM Club, Track team, Volleyball team, and Student Council. Away from school, she severs the community through her church youth group, and Beta Club and FBLA service projects. Following high school, Ashlyn plans to study Forensic Science at Murray State University.
Jayden Hayes is the son of Jason & Kerri Hayes of Russellville. He is a member of the LCHS Soccer and Archery teams, FBLA, and Beta Club. Away from the school, he serves his community through Beta Club and FBLA projects, as well as working with the elderly. After high school, Jayden plans to attend Western Kentucky University and major in Business.
Morgan Gafford is the daughter of Adam & Lori Gafford of Lewisburg. She is a member of the school’s Beta Club, FBLA, Jr. Optimist Club, Student Council, Logan Ambassadors program, Soccer team, and Swim team. Away from school, she serves the community through her church youth group, the Blue Skies Cancer Ministry, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, clothing drives, canned food drives, trash pickups, teaching children to swim, and educating the public about Child Abuse Awareness. Following high school, Morgan plans to attend Western Kentucky University and major in Business.
Micah Page is the daughter of Mark & Jalee Page of Russellville.. She is a member of the school’s Beta Club, FBLA, FFA, LCCN Student News team, Logan Ambassadors program, and the LCHSTrack and Volleyball teams. Away from school, she serves the community teaching children’s Sunday School at her church, and through FFA service opportunities. With many interests, Micah remains undecided on majors and which college she plans to attend following high school graduation.
Established in 1983, the Governor’s Scholars Program (GSP) strives to enhance Kentucky’s next generation of civic and economic leaders as well as create models of educational excellence. Annually, approximately 1,000 rising seniors are selected for the program. Admission into the program begins at the start of a junior’s school year; however, acceptance is based on qualities the scholar has displayed throughout his or her life experiences, including academic performance, participation in extracurricular activities, and volunteerism.
Chosen recipients are rewarded with a stimulating five-week residential summer program at one of three Kentucky university campuses-- Bellarmine University in Louisville, Centre College in Danville, and Morehead State University in Morehead-- where they are studying a given focus area that aligns with their personal interests. GSP participation also qualifies participants for a collection of scholarship opportunities through many of the state’s institutions of higher learning.
